"Inspired by many years of visiting such great venues as the Jazzcafe, Madame Jo Jo's, Point 101, the Jazz Rooms and even wandering further afield to legendary places such as the Green Mile in Chicago and the Elbo Rooms in San Francisco...and finding ourselves struggling to find any real places to go out in Birmingham over the years (bar the few good promotions that have kept us going i.e. Sweat, Fungle Junk, Leftfoot, Jazz Club, Circo etc.), we decided that Birmingham is long overdue a bar and live music venue pivoting on the Jazz and Funk staple. So, after a grueling process of finding the right premises to set up home, we finally made the deal back in Dec06 and opened our doors in Feb07. Our concept is simple...we want to provide a funky and intimate place where people can hang out, watch bands and dj's play, have a dance, have a bite to eat, and just generally feel enveloped in a warm and wonderful atmosphere. There isn't any dresscode, grumpy bouncers or even an ounce of pretension...just friendly faces, quality music, food and drink at very reasonable prices. We are now ten months in after opening (Dec07) and the response has been amazing! We knew you good people were out there, but not in such full force. Thank you to everyone that has put The Yardbird on the map, from the great staff, regular customers old and new, and the bands, djs and promoters that have realised and help maintain my dream of doing something musically, socially and culturally different in Birmingham. Bring on 2008!" - Ollie Lloyd (Owner/Promoter)
OPENING HOURS: SUNDAY - WEDNESDAY 12PM TILL 12AM / THURSDAY - SATURDAY 12PM TILL 2AM. DELICIOUS HOME COOKED FRESH FOOD SERVED MON - SAT 12PM - 7PM. LARGE LICENSED (YES YOU CAN TAKE YOUR DRINKS OUTSIDE) OUTDOOR SMOKING AREA. FRIENDLY AND UNPRETENTIOUS STAFF. WE'RE STITUATED NEXT DOOR TO THE COPTHORNE HOTEL / PARADISE FORUM (WHICH IS NEXT DOOR TO CENTRAL LIBRARY).
YARDBIRD FLYERS
Who I'd like to meet: Musically dicerning people that aren't getting enough of a funk fix out of Birmingham. Jazz cats, be-bopers and beret wearing, goatee geezers that like to tap their feet to the beat. Jazz-dancers with a lack of floor to spin their heels on. Jazz/Funk/Latin/Soul/Afrobeat/Boogaloo/HipHop/Beats DJ's, Bands and Promoters interested in performing at THE YARDBIRD. And anyone else with a good attitude that wants to contribute to the making of Birmingham's very own jazz and funk parlour.
Thank you for the friendship and the comment! What a bummer - I was actually just in the UK!!...Ah well, I'll be back. Yardbird seems like a really cool place to play.
Hey ! thanks for the comment ! looking forward to our UK tour, still working on it, just need to put a couple of dates together. Keep you posted ! funk it up bro
HEY the yardbird - We've just added a preview of 3 new tracks. Check them out and let us know what you think. We'll let you know when the finished versions are available.
Important news! Annoucing the return to the Birmingham scene of Steve Tromans and his music. On Thursday 8th January 2009, the Steve Tromans Debop Trio +1 will be performing at the Yardbird. During the evening's proceedings Steve will present some never before heard small band pieces dating back to his time in the house band at Birmingham's Fiddle & Bone, as well as music composed during his two year nine month time abroad in Russia, Mongolia, China, Oman, Dubai and Italy.
Joining Steve, Chris Mapp (bass) and Miles Levin (drums) will be composer/poet Sid Peacock, who will be reciting alongside the Debop Trio to present the premiere of Tromans' "Bomb - a musical setting of the poem by Gregory Corso", part three of his "Beat Series" five-year project to write musical works based around four of the major works of the Beat Generation. Beat Series started back in 2004 with the work "Howl" (a Birmingham Jazz commission).
This is Steve's first gig back in Birmingham since he left the UK in April 2006. If you have the chance to come along, please do and come and listen to what impact almost three years on the road has had on his playing and composition.
