Bio
Shane O'Keeffe knows all about faith. In his 26 years, he's had it shaken by some of the closest people in his life. Time and again, he's had it restored by the power of song. "I'm a big fan of Paul Dempsey, Wilco, Death Cab For Cutie, the National," he says. "The thing I like about all of them is their honesty. They don't hide behind generalisations. "You hear lyrics all the time that could be talking about a million and one things. But when writers get down to specifics, talk about things unique to them and their particular moment, that's when I start paying attention. I want to be able to picture a story." The specifics of Shane's story paint an extraordinary picture. He was born in Melbourne. His parents split when he was an infant and he moved to the Gold Coast with his mother. "She was a rocker, man — long, curly hair," he grins. "Loved Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams. She used to play drums." She also played a bass guitar. She gave it to Shane for his 14th birthday, when money got too tight for presents. By the time he was 21, he'd lost her to a rare disease. That same year he switched to guitar. Music became his primary comfort and companion. He cut his teeth in a string of bands, even scored a major label contract with one of them. "I loved touring," he says. "It can be an exhausting experience, but when you see people connecting with your music it can be really inspiring." When Shane moved back to Melbourne in 2009, his years of experience immediately began to manifest their rewards in songs. Songs of love and loss, obsession and transcendence. Songs that cut to the bone and touched many who heard them. One of these was producer Barry Palmer. He brought in Andy Baldwin (Paul Dempsey, Midnight Juggernauts) and Tom Larkin (Young Heretics, Calling All Cars,Young And Restless) to record and mix the debut Young Faithful EP. The Young Faithful's sound — urgent but warm, oozing melody, confidence and purpose —began to form in the hands of a five-piece band with combined experience belying their youth. "I've written songs about real experiences in my life. Songs that touch on my mum passing away; songs about human relationships. Small observations that I hope draw bigger conclusions for people," Shane says. And so they do, from the plaintive song of obsession, Orchid; to the lyrical maturity of Freight Train, a song for Shane's estranged father; to the joyous pop momentum and wry philosophical insights of Grass Is Greener and Fly Away. "Fly Away is about being a musician," he says with a smile. "It's a world of promises and illusions so you need to hang onto what's real about it. "I feel something when I listen to a great song. And if I could do the same with my writing, talk about my experiences and have the listener relate , that would be a real achievement. I just hope the songs tell their own stories." - Michael Dwyer (The Age) .. -
