The Young Wire Wicks started off as roommates and open mic regulars in Edmonton, AB - competing with bar noise and free beer – trying to build as musicians and as writers. Since those beginning days, they have scraped together experience by playing shows in both Edmonton and Calgary, playing on tour through BC – as well as recording a first self-titled EP this past spring.
Through cooperative and independent writing, they have turned out thought-provoking and unique sounds with influences stretching from Morrissey to Townes Van Zandt. Their songs often serve as flexible skeletons, since they experiment with new sounds, and interesting tweaks every time they sit down to practice. Still, the words you hear will be consistent: everything from heartbreak and sorrows to … heartbreak and sorrows. Don’t expect to hear happy songs from The Young Wire Wicks.
Overall, you will notice that The Young Wire Wicks play a different kind of Folk – one that is decidedly daring, using original lyrics acquainted with literature, personal experience, and fictional projection. A vital blend of Electric Acoustic guitar, a small Korg, and two uncommon vocal styles brings a feeling home – or takes you somewhere new. Whichever you decide.
I was listening to your songs and decided they were severly lacking in Canadian content. Here's a suggestion: how about changing "Minnesota" to "Manitoba". Come on, that is genius. Or, "Minnedosa"! That's a city in Manitoba. Yeah, you should call it "Minnedosa, Manitoba"!
