Since Thiestru is a one-man band and always has been, it's hard to say when exactly it began. I started playing music twelve years ago, but I really only began to write stuff about eight or nine years ago, and only one or two songs from that period are extant today. The current sound of Thiestru really began to come into being in 2004 or so, maybe 2003, with some hints of what was to come a couple of years earlier than that.
Originally, what came to be called 'Thiestru' was much more straightforward metal, almost all electric guitar based, quite similar to Nevermore, some Blind Guardian, and, later, Opeth. I usually composed and recorded at the same time, with the result being that I'd have ten-minute-plus songs that were recorded at different intervals, with sound quality being very uneven throughout. On the other hand, I think I made some interesting and adventurous stuff, as immature as it was.
But as time went on, I found that I was playing the acoustic guitar much more often, and that, no longer having a computer to use (a series of moves rendered me computerless), my songs got shorter and less overtly 'metal'. Another big change was that I began to focus more on mood and emotion much more than technicality (I used to be a huge Yngwie fan...), a change that I attribute to Opeth and, even more so, Katatonia. In 2004 and 2005 I wrote a lot of very Katatonia-inspired songs, and, awesome as that band is, it's hard to really go wrong with mimicking them a bit. And mimicking them I was, although as time passed I discerned that a style that I could call 'mine' was emerging.
Now, a few years later, I think that musical style has continued to develop, and, owing largely to things that have happened in my life, so has my lyrical style - only natural, of course. Regrettably, I've written what I'd consider some pretty good songs that I've mostly forgotten, since I can only remember so much, not having had use of a computer for so long. Now, however, this is changing at last.
As of May 1, 2008, I've begun to record what will be the (first?) Thiestru demo, tentatively titled 'Heartsick'. Only one song for this EP has been recorded so far, since I've been out of town for the last couple of weeks. I expect to record four or five more and then, hopefully, start sending them out to independent metal labels. Wish me luck!
Time Has a Way gets me so pumped I could bone a fat chick. Well not quite that pumped but dang, keep posting your stuff man. I wanna wear you on a t-shirt someday.
Well I'm traveling Over Mount and Valley the next few days to meet my Heir Apparent (David) in Ag, just trying to say I'd probably Hessian Peel my pants if a new recording was up upon my return.
I'm glad to see this finally come about, after the years of prodding on the part of numerous friends. I look forward to hearing more as you upload more songs (and you will).
Amazing stuff man! You should've seen how shocked I was when I saw Thiestru adding me! It's hard to fit in the awesomeness of Iron Maiden and Thiestru into two days. *Overawesomed*!!
