Well that depends on whether you are speaking numerically or philosophically. Philosophically speaking I would say lack of imagination, lack of any inclination or aspiration to do anything different than every other drummer who follows the path of the least common denominator, average or mundane.
Numerically speaking a standard five piece kit is "the standard" for a reason. It's what everyone else does on average. So, anything less than standard is getting into the category of small. If a drummer is playing a four piece kit he better be the next Buddy Rich or something. Not just another basic rock beat wanna be weezer whiney unoriginal alternative copy band. Anything smaller than a four piece kit and you're probably not putting forth the effort a paying crowd deserves. Of course, as I said before there are always exceptions but if the drummer is playing a four or five piece kit I'm probably not going to experience anything I haven't seen before a gazillion times over. In conclusion if the drummer is playing something like this:
If my opinion counts for anything I have to say that my level of interest in seeing a band, as a general rule of thumb and with very few exceptions is directly proportional to the number of drums on the drummer's drum set. Although correlation does not equal causation (thus the very few exceptions), it does seem that small drum sets and lame bands go hand in hand. Additionally, I would also not like to hear keyboards, banjos or steel guitars. Thanks.
