CONCEPT:

There are only so many chances you get in life – to live, to love, to dream, explore, to right a wrong, make amends, to be a friend, to raise a child, to make your mark and accomplish something good along the way. And while we live in hope that tomorrow will be better than today, we can never be sure of what lurks beyond the hilltop or just around the bend.

And so we spend our lives searching. In the hope, perhaps, of a better life in a better world, a dream fulfilled or a promise kept… something, anything that can save us from this most unenviable fate: to die without ever having lived.

THIS HARD LAND - a new one-hour dramatic series - offers a poignant insight into this human condition as manifested in the lives of its resident characters: the internal manifestation of our struggles, the complexities and consequences of our choices, the compromises we learn to accept and the redemption we ultimately seek.

THIS HARD LAND is an idea inspired by the lyrics to a Bruce Springsteen song of the same name: a song that begins with doubt and uncertainty, “Hey there mister, can you tell me what happened to the seeds I’ve sowed? Can you give me a reason sir as to why they’ve never grown?” and concludes with a sense of hope, “Stay hard, stay hungry, and stay alive if you can. And meet me in a dream of this hard land.”

In describing his mindset while writing the songs that comprise his Darkness on the Edge of Town album, Springsteen offers this scenario: “I intentionally steered away from any hint of escapism and set my characters down in the middle of a community under siege” while contemplating “the idea that the setting for personal transformation is often found at the end of your rope.”

Inspired by this concept of a "community under siege," THIS HARD LAND is a drama that revolves around universal themes relevant to the human experience. It’s an experience that at times produces glorious results and other times quite tragic.
