"Field recording is the technique for capturing the audible illustration of an environment, produced outside of a recording studio. A "field recording" is the actual recording that is produced."

Field recordings are direct and naked documents of sound. This is not a new concept to the music world, but one that I want to pick up and run with, and maybe try and give a new angle on.
I’m a music writer of sorts. I want to write about music in a form that is readily accessible to anyone who wants to read it. Like a music blog for instance. However, my problem with music journalism is that is too easy to be remote and unengaging. As I don’t consider myself a very good writer, this is something I think I suffer from. There’s often a distance between writer, musician and reader, and that’s where I want this to come in.
Basically, I’ll be interviewing touring musicians, and asking them if they want to perform a song there and then, recording to whatever super duper lo-fi equipment available at the time, i.e. my dictaphone. The idea is to produce an unprepared, unscripted and direct performance that documents the time and place where it was recorded. Hopefully this will yield some intimate and exciting recordings, or simply show a song in a different light. I’ll probably be recording some buskers as well. And filming people.
It’s either a GOOD IDEA, or GRAND FOLLY. We’ll see.
