Mongolia represents the solemn side of Wilson's musical schizophrenia. Originally the project was very dark and experimental, inspired by bands like This Heat and Joy Division. Wilson recorded an unreleased album in 2004 entitled “Disequilibrium” under the Mongolia moniker. The album, recorded entirely on cassette four-track, is murky, tense and apocalyptic, with dissonant guitars, radio noises and metallic polyrhythms that sound like they come from another dimension. Some tracks may be found on the Paper Hat site. The original project has been renamed War of Nerves. A follow-up album was half-finished and then scrapped due to technological breakdown.
The Mongolia moniker was set aside for a year and a half while Wilson focused on his many other projects, but re-emerged in 2005 with two new songs and an entirely revamped sound. Wilson recorded “Macquarie Island” and “Rainy Tangled Lanes,” which had a much more accessible and expansive pop sound, with bells, pianos and sound effects. Mongolia's primary influences include Brian Eno, Leonard Cohen, slowcore (Idaho, Bedhead, Low), Big Star and Magnetic Fields. More material was written while Wilson lived in Japan in the fall of 2006, and “Hey Sunflower” was recorded in the spring of 2007, adding another new element to the project's expanding palette of sounds – a Japanese koto. In May 2007, Mongolia played its first live set with Jade Stephens (bass) and Brian Hedgepeth (drums), both from Wilson's band Warm Erasers. Upon graduation from college in 2007, Wilson returned to his hometown of Dallas, TX and spent most of 2007 and early 2008 working on the first Exploding Schoolgirls album “Feast of Excited Insects.”
In 2008, the project transformed into a full band, adding Bradford Jackson (formerly of Land and Station) on drums, David Swift (formerly of Johnny Blackmouth) on guitar and vocals and part-time member Connor Stratman on guitar. Wilson plays bass and sings. Swift and Wilson had been playing together off and on for the past year, and Swift and Jackson attended the University of Texas at Dallas together and played in the band Soyuz Union. Stratman, a former student of Wilson's at a summer program many years ago, played with the band over the summer and plans to perform with the band whenever he's not in Illinois attending college. The band has spent the summer honing their spacious live sound and expanding their increasingly large repertoire of songs – which also includes songs from other Wilson projects. Hayley Young joined the band on violin and keyboard in October, and the band's sound continued to grow. The band has also commenced the recording of all new tracks, with plans to begin work on an album.
