Hailing from the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Steven ‘Steesh’ Haggie specializes in that ‘true boom bap’ that Hip-Hop is famed for. His creativity is allowing him to take steps in the right direction of becoming a hugely recognized talent.
Steesh was introduced to Hip-Hop in his early high school days, citing icons such as Slick Rick, The Beastie Boys and Run DMC as the premier artists to draw him to the ever-evolving genre. As his affair with Hip-Hop strengthened he found himself relating to and pulling inspiration from the works of De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, the late Jay Dilla, The Pharcyde and producers DJ Premier and Dr. Dre. But it was his vast knowledge of music in general that has allowed him to surpass his own expectations as a producer.
It was self-teaching that put Steesh in front of a mixing desk. His fascination for the making of music encouraged him to purchase a copy of Cubase and from there he experimented and strived to understand the fundamentals of creating music. It didn’t take him long to master the basics and within a couple of years he was selling beats to local MCs and singers. But like many of his contemporaries Steesh discovered that Myspace was a way in which to connect with like-minded creative souls all over the world. “I began messaging all my favourite artists about possible tracks, most responded very quickly but there were a few that took a lot of hassling and messaging to arrange but I persevered,” Steesh explains. “I never thought that this sort of thing would have been possible, working with your icons, so I’m very grateful to myspace for helping me get things together.”
Having been approached to work on projects by Butta Verses and Filth (The Fresh Air Fund) for their up and coming projects, this opened the vast doors on the United States for the up and coming producer. Sparking up a positive relationship with the duo, Steesh was then invited to spend some time in Florida with the Glee Club Detention. The outfit consisting of like minds such as Doc SuS, DJ Shorte, Lucian, SS1 and Maseo of De La Soul encouraged a new level of production from the English beatsmith.
“That whole experience taught me so much, which I have incorporated into my processes too and working hands on with an engineer was a great experience. The reality of it being that I had I not taken the plunge and headed out to Florida to work with those guys I doubt my music would be where it is right now.” Going on to produce two tracks on the Butta Verses album Reality BV, Steesh found his music being added to the Beats and Rhymes Library, a music publishing company dealing primarily with Hip-Hop and urban music. His understanding of music and his talent have allowed Steesh to work with Hip-Hop staples such as Guilty Simpson, Slum Village, Frank n Dank, Phat Kat, Melanie Rutherford, Wordsworth and many more as he continues the ever winding road he has put himself on.
Joining forces with an artist also from the North of England, Baron Von Alias on his debut album Timepiece has allowed Steesh the opportunity to have his music heard by a more varied audience. Timepiece has already garnered solid attention by industry tastemakers and as Steesh handles the bulk of the production it is guaranteed that there is so much more to come from Steesh in '09 to infinity.
