Sunbear play Graffiti’s (170 Baldwin) July 7.
Sunbear are the latest group led by singer-songwriter Kate Boothman, formerly known as Horse. The name is different, but the acoustic twang is intact. Recorded by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor, Sun Streaming In is soaked with standard country themes including loves wanted (the title track), loves lost (“In The Country”), and loves who didn’t really love at all (“Ghost of Myself,” whose wrenching lines include “I made you happy, you made me hurt / I gave you honey, you gave me dirt.” Ow.)
It’s a slow-burning, hazy, poetry book of an album. Don’t bother waiting for the token upbeat tracks — there aren’t any. What you’ll find instead are simply presented, heart-searing folk songs that are gorgeously sorrowful and perfectly easy to relate to. That last aspect might be Sun Streaming In’s greatest comfort: the pain may hurt like hell, but, as with any good, swift kick to the heart, knowing someone else has stood in the same crappy place takes away a bit of the sting. Well, that and a few shots of whisky. ...

EXCLAIM! MAGAZINE- Sunbear
Sun Streaming In
By Kerry Doole.
Toronto, ON country folk singer-songwriter Kate Boothman briefly traded under the name Horse, and is now reincarnated as Sunbear. Slightly dodgy moniker aside, this is a potential-packed project, judging from the formidable strength of this debut album. The tempo throughout verges on Cowboy Junkies-/Mazzy Star-like slow and sombre terrain, but the eloquent songs and performances ensure that tedium is kept at bay. Boothman has a pleasingly understated vocal style, one fully showcased on the gorgeous "City Escape," on which she is solely accompanied by the haunting pedal steel of Dale Murray (Cuff the Duke). Elsewhere, the extensive use of female harmony vocals (from Julie Fader and Melissa Boraski) complements her voice most effectively. The impeccable instrumental work is provided by such notable players as Travis Good (the Sadies), Murray, veterans Michelle Josef and Clive MacNutt, and Greg Keelor, who recorded and mixed the album at his farm. The interplay between Keelor's resonant guitar twang and Murray's steel on "Diamonds and Gold," in particular, is a real highlight. The colourful cover art by indie rock hero Rick White (Eric's Trip) is a bonus on this charming disc. (Independent)
