If you’ve been looking for a real rock bank, one whose music is worth listening to, buying, seeing live, not a femmed-up, ultra-styled gimmick, you’re in luck – I’m pleased to introduce The Darlings.
Based in London , this band is the product of 3 guys – 2 Brits and 1 Slovak – whose individual influences range from the melodic wonders of Weller, Lennon, Finn and Young, to the energy and soul James Brown and John Scofield. The result? Music you always want to listen to, a show that always rocks, and a band you want to follow.
The band’s long-awaited 4 song EP, “Souvenir”, reflects their influences and illustrates the level the band is taking themselves to. Harmonies abound. Recorded in January 07, produced by Rob Granville, and mastered by John Astley (Led Zep, The Who), this EP more than satisfies with its mix of moving tunes and stuck-in-your-mind melodies. “Black & White” immediately makes your body move with its strong bass, and even when it kicks in, the song doesn’t forget the importance of a memorable melody. “Careful What You Say” is a straight-on rock tune, consistently moving and gradually getting more tight. “This Tender Line” mixes poetic lyrics and sexy lines, easily striding into the rocking chorus; the bridge is eloquent, the hooks do what they should. “Souvenir”, the last song, encapsulates the band as it captures the fun of a rock song while showing a retro-Motown feel, only to end in a soft outro.
Formed in 2002, The Darlings have made their mark on the London music scene by opening for likes of Pete Best and playing where people know their stuff. The live show pulls you in, and rocks you out, and a look around the room illustrates that everyone feels the same. This band has a following, and new recruits join at every show. The music fills you – its real emotion, its fun, electric. For The Darlings’ fans its another great show, another burst of energy. For a newbie, its exciting, as it becomes clear that real rock isn’t dead.
