Thomas County Museum of History's Blurbs
About me:
I was born in 1952 in Thomasville, Georgia, as the Thomas County Historical Society. Thomasville is the county seat of Thomas County (30 miles northeast of Tallahassee, FL), founded in 1825 as a product of the 1820 land lottery.

Originally, my mission was to write a history of Thomas County. But as artifact donations from local families poured in, it became clear I would need to become a permanent organization dedicated to preserving and sharing our local history.

On my 20th birthday in 1972, I received a donation of a historic house in downtown Thomasville to serve as our museum. On the property there were already two other historic structures, including an 1877 middle-class home and an 1893 single-lane bowling alley! Several years later we added an 1860s log house, and most recently an 1890s courthouse.

Our local history and culture is largely affected by two phenomena: our resort period, roughly from 1880-1910, and our hunting plantations, most of which are still privatly owned. The combined affects of being a railroad terminus and a willingness to sell property to outsiders following the Civil War created a culture of toleration and an atmosphere of diversity which continues to this day.

Thomas County has both given birth to and temporarily adopted many famous sons and daughters. Current Jacksonville Jaguar defensive lineman Marcus Stroud, 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward and former New York Giants cornerback Myron Guyton grew up here. Actress Joanne Woodword grew up in Thomasville as well, as did the first African-American graduate of West Point, Henry Flipper. Presidents William McKinley and Dwight Eisenhower enjoyed vacationing here, as did Hubert Humphrey, George McGovern, and Jackie Kennedy. Many of these famous vacationeers stayed at Greenwood plantation, owned by their friend John Hay Whitney.
