About me:
The Thomas Merton Center (TMC) is a peace and justice non-profit organization in Pittsburgh, PA. Our mission statement reads, “We are people from diverse philosophies and faiths who find common ground in the nonviolent struggle to bring about a more peaceful and just world. We work to raise the moral questions involved in the issues of war, poverty, racism, and oppression.” The TMC acts as a resource and organizing center for 26 different projects that range from an anti-war committee, a books-to-prisoners program, a group working on “greening” vacant lots, an effort to fight for sustainable funding for public transit and even a local chapter of the School of the Americas Watch.
The TMC has been around since 1972 and activities have included organizing the first Amnesty International chapter in Pittsburgh, helping the Jubilee Soup Kitchen and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank get underway, arranging the Witness for Peace visits to Central America, facilitating the Pittsburgh/San Isidro (Nicaragua) Sister City Project and other direct aid projects, working against the nuclear arms race and wasteful military spending, and supporting boycotts like the INFACT campaign against Nestle. Through the years, the Center has educated and organized against world and local hunger, exploitation of workers, militarism, and racial discrimination in Pittsburgh. Members have been arrested protesting the B-1 bomber, nuclear weapons and apartheid in South Africa. They have organized fasts, vigils and civil disobedience actions challenging local nuclear weapons producers.
In addition to the campaigns, the TMC has become a resource for dozens of social justice and peace groups in the region. The monthly newspaper, "The NewPeople," is a key source of information for activists on current actions, campaigns and events. Our website provides an up-to-date action calendar and our justice, peace and ecology directory of local groups. We send out semi-weekly e-newsletters to our membership list of over 1500 people to keep them updated on meetings, actions and events in the area.
