ABOUT
when an artist thinks that he should do something, has to create something, than he got to have just one quality: he has got to live at the moment and see what's going on around him.
a great musician makes that one will notice some kind of personal difference between before and after listening to a piece.
as thomas nordwest does with his minimal composition "tryangle", that can be found on the internet and downloaded for free on his web site (thomasnordwest.com).
the stirring thing about it is, that before you have heard this fine and delicate sound you were overwhelmed by the flood of noises getting used to in the daily grind, after you heard it, you experience the opening of a wide room in your head, that just won’t get narrow again when the sound disappears; you feel some kind of balance in your life again just because of this petite incident.
additionally this video of seven seconds length shows, that just as the vibrancy in the air affects the flame of the candle, music affects all material of the world we are living in, as well as it’s breathing inhabitants; music affects everything as a formless motion and wipes away great confusion and irritations with a little notion.
it’s not sufficient to reduce a musician like thomas to just one aspect of his work. thomas is best known for his long-term appearance as "sonic fusion", on music festivals and club events, and his performances in concerts and on tv in front of a millions of people, but, looking on his whole œuvre, you recognize, that he has not been concentrating on this only; more interesting things were worked out:
sound installations for exhibitions, like the museum of fine arts in vienna, gallery exhibitions, the ars electronica festival, productions for animation shows - and awarded feature films in austria and the usa, where thomas lived and worked too.
also he composed for theater productions, for successful computer games and interdisciplinary art projects like "symbiose", where paintings became acoustic landscapes.
His music productions on various labels like sony music, warner music, jvc and others count up to 69 releases by now, which contain many top-10 positions, what makes him an all-rounder in the media-culture-scene.
it’s save to say that if you would see just one aspect of all he's every did, you thin out the whole package, the personal motivation of trying to build up something against being thinned out to just one boring type of self-expression routine.
surely you can try to find categorizations for thomas, you may say that he makes some kind of "electronically touched world music", you may say that he belongs to the elite of austrian producers on the four-on-the-floor-sector, but that really means diminishing his claim of creating a new kind of musical expression, that is left a little ominous at the moment, until we will know how exactly it will sound like and that he calls
"symphonic beats"; a music style in which leading musicians from all over the world are going to participate and that will burst the borders of traditional music production.
also it is his claim to find out what the technical elaboration of music can become for the people who are enjoying it. he tries to achieve some kind of synthesis of the arts, in which music, fine arts and design, photography, dance and performance, film and animation, literature and so on come together in one; he tries to impress all senses, even the one, which is besides the known five ones the most quiet and undervalued today; the soul.
"music is like water. to remain its impulsive agility, it needs to flow.",
states thomas in the vita he sent to me. it seems to me, he himself is the river bed that manages to change the direction of what floats through it, again and again, creating places where those, who want to jump into his sound can join a great adventure and wash away the dust of the ordinary, helping dry land to become fertile on the other hand.
with his kind of producing music he is able to satisfy the objective market of composition as well as the subjective and solipsistic perception of the individual consumer of fine-quality sounds.
thomas nordwest shows what is to be shown; not as what it appears, but as what it can appear; destructs the old and invents something new out of the fragments; knows where he is coming from, but still finds himself at new and unseen places again and again; is above, in front and inside the things he experiences and puts them in shape for the whole world to have for itself.
