Biography:
"They don't need me or anyone else to tell them that they've got the real thing here. They couldn't sound like this without already knowing that. Wow."
Bob Elliott @ CD Baby
Brokenflower are a London-based band employing a combination of amazingly crafted songs, a staggering voice, and great band dynamics, to win over both audiences and promoters alike. At any moment they can break your heart, make you dance uncontrollably, and then, at the drop of a hat, fill the room with a monstrous wall of sound worthy of any stadium.
Their unmistakable quality stems from a life-long obsession with music. From indie/rock to dirty funk, classical to batucada, they listen to it all. In fact, if you put their record collections together and laid them in a line, you could get to the Manchester Apollo and back. They’re music geeks at heart.
They might just be one of the best and brightest new bands to emerge from the capital in quite some time. But don’t take our word for it - come to a show and witness it for yourselves. A recent (completely un-scientific) survey found that after a performance, 92.7% of people in attendance realised they had just discovered their new favourite band, as well as finding a renewed faith in humanity and the redemptive soul saving power of rock music….and that was on an off day.
The band formed after a chance meeting in 2006 between Thom Lyons (Vocals & Guitar) and Thomas Quillfeldt (Bass, Cello, Piano & Vocals). The connection was instant, and they soon began performing and writing as a duo.
After a few months of near constant requests for a CD people could take home, the time came to expand the line-up and head into the studio. They recruited old friends Oli Felton (guitar, vocals) and Andrew Shannon (drums) and recorded their first CD, "Make It Up As We Go". It was a remarkable assured debut, marking them out as a talent to watch.
The rest of 2007 saw the band continue to wow audiences across the capital, saw Thom venture to the US to play to audiences in New York and Chicago, and saw the line-up expand once again with the addition of cellist Emily Rice. At the end of the year they headed back to the studio to record a new EP, “This Is How It Goes”.
2008 saw the band grow both in quality and popularity. New material has showcased the great musical strides the band have been taking, and their roof raising show at Monto Water Rats in May saw them attract their biggest crowd to date. After taking a break towards the end of the year to start writing the next record, 2009 promises to be their biggest year yet.
Dear friends, I am playing a free gig at the beauteous Union Chapel, Islington this Saturday. The sunlight will be streaming through its vaulted windows as Blank Canvas and Arctic Circle present this gig during the blessed daylight hours of 12-2. And yea shall its hallowed interior be filled with all manner of scraping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. Let us pray. And then let us go to the pub.
Hiya! How's it going? In a world where everything has a price and we're all counting our pennies, music has become priceless. As a way of thanks to our loyal fans, we will be giving away free downloads every month to our mailing list members.
