PORCH FUNK is the debut album from Steve Thompson and Bryan Ward. An inspired mix of country, rock, soul and Mississippi roots, mark the fruits of their labor as the duo’s new album promises to introduce the world to their unique style of music they’ve dubbed. PORCH FUNK.
Born and raised in Mississippi, Steve Thompson never had to look far for inspiration as an artist. “Growing up here, we always felt proud and fortunate to have been raised in an environment so rich with musical talent—Rock and Roll, Blues, Gospel—they started here. This place gives us our stories—the music is how we tell them.” While cutting his teeth in honky-tonks and roadhouses—venues with legendary names like The Gin, Gabriel’s, and The Abbey—Thompson began a musical journey that would eventually lead to collaborator Bryan Ward. “I had songs and licks in my head all the time, every day. For years, Bryan and I worked together to make them into a record that satisfied us both. We couldn’t be more different musically or politically. This record is where we found common ground.”
Bryan Ward is a student of politics, religion, love, vice, recovery, resurrection, joy, music, and the ties that bind. After touring North America as a founding member of Capitol Records’ group Bonepony, he went on to write and produce a series of acclaimed multi-genre solo albums. While making those records, he began writing songs with his old friend Steve Thompson. Though neither one saw it coming, the process gradually transformed them into a duo, aptly named Thompson Ward. “You go to people who you know are going to deliver,” says Ward. “As a writer and a producer, you are always trying to create something flawless. That’s what this record is for me. My friend Steve and some amazing musicians enabled us to create something that I really love to hear.”
Described by Thompson as a combination of love, lust, and politics, PORCH FUNK will be released on Jam Shack Records in early May 2008.
