This collective of music oriented companies *Sabikulture Media under Sabina Diaz, CDnutz CD Duplication under Godhead The General (EMCEE, Businessman), 828 Studios under Ahd Child (EMCEE, Producer, Engineer), and The Weapons Locker under Mekz One (Producer, EMCEE)* (ThorTakeOver) pioneered a movement for Emcees in Philly. Their events provide an outlet for hungry artists who did not have a place in Philly to be heard, especially since the city had been run mostly by live band events, and slim pickings for emcees to showcase their talents. Fast forward one year later; ThorTakeOver has provoked a slew of hip hop promoters to produce live hip hop performance events at various venues around the city. On an average Saturday night it is easy to find at least four underground hip hop events, when one year ago, there was not even one event on a Saturday night which featured live hip hop performances.
In March 2006, ThorTakeOver began the emcee movement by hosting a weekly cipher event at Medusa Lounge in Philly, PA for the past year, which has now moved to Liquid Charm every first Thursday. We call the event Mic Check THORsday. The event consists of a producer showcase while Emcees rhyme over their beats. The cipher can become intense with clever lyricism, captivating spectators and other emcees alike. Vocalists are also welcomed in the cipher. The cipher is not just limited to Emcees. Between 11pm-12am you'll catch featured performances from Philly's most talented hip hop scene.
We also have another event every last Saturday at The Underground, Philly PA. The format is cipher and live performances.
