Here is a review of the CD by Roxanne Blanford of All Music.
Thought Brigade's debut CD is an engaging recording that is a step up from being just another standard issue rock release. This is due to the loose and expansive production style of Dave Brown, former guitarist for Billy Joel, and the evocative songwriting of frontman Rob C. Painfully Close showcases Rob C's emotive guitar playing and sincere vocal delivery, matched with the catchy basslines and varied beats which support its overall groove. From the very first chords, it is apparent that this foursome have been deeply influenced by mid-80s rock but torn between going lo-fi or new wave. Rob C sounds vaguely like a cross between Ric Ocasek and David Byrne on a few tracks, while tight guitar hooks scream out early REM. In any event, the tunes are catchy and melodic, and with keyboards driving the rhythm, these songs bristle with nuance and vitality. Time will tell whether or not Thought Brigade evolves into mainstream rock & roll or remains nestled in the world of quiet indie rock.
