I'd Like To Die A Thousand Times's Blurbs |
About me:
I’d Like To Die A Thousand Times, Edwin Brienen’s eighth feature film, follows two couples during twenty-four hours of summer distortion and deadly heat. What starts as a peaceful Summer afternoon -drinking wine, playing a relaxed game of Monopoly- ends with the violent excesses of one night. “It belongs to life, death. Even if it’s horrible” says main character Blake somewhere halfway the film, as if he likes to apologize for his deeds. Near the end, after blood is shed, he concludes: “I don’t believe in good or evil. Don’t you think it’s strange, that the best things in life are never told. That as a child, you don’t learn how to reach the sky”.
Director and writer Edwin Brienen said: “I’m always interested to see how norms and values in today’s society are created, and especially manipulated. How we desperately need to categorize things as wrong or right. It is completely out of control. Condemning Britney Spears for not wearing underwear, but not giving a shit about hundreds of death in Iraq everyday. I wanted to play with these hypocritical contradictions. That’s why the film is told from the perspectives of the bad guys, the killers. Don’t get me wrong, not particular as a political statement… Especially because it’s much more fun too”.
The lead roles are played by Clayton Nemrow, Esther Eva Verkaaik, Sebastian Suba and Eva Dorrepaal. Shaun Lawton, who appeared with Isabelle Adjani in Zulawski's masterpiece Possession, co-stars in this controversial film. Barbel Schleker and Rene Ifrah complete the cast.
Dutch author Thomas van Aalten wrote and performed half of the soundtrack. In a former life, van Aalten was known for his alter ego Thom Revolver, see also TR's MySpace website. Haunting songs like Killing You / Killing Me and Horror Night drive the already loaded atmosphere of the film to the level of a claustrophobic maze with its disturbing, pulsating beats. The whereabouts of Mirist Egal, who wrote the other, more atmospheric half of the soundtrack, are unknown. He probably lives in Istanbul. His soundscapes and noises are made of 'objets trouves' that have underwent producing mostly in software. Check out his fan website, for some information and streams: www.zutaten.nl/miristegal.
“There was no budget for this production, which created an immense amount of freedom” according to Brienen. “I wasn't trying to create the masterpiece of my life; I just wanted to have fun. I’d Like To Die is a throwback to Terrorama!, my debut film, but without its political weight. And without the money! We only had six days to shoot the film, and those six days were during the intense heat of August last year, when the temperature rose to 42 degrees. After one day of shooting outside, everybody felt sick and weak, but somehow we managed to finish. Evil Heat would have been a great title too.”
