One day while turning compost we were stunned by the grace of a group of worms. Could this beauty be harnessed? Would they be willing to collaborate? Here is the answer
A while ago the urge came upon us again to write some Thrashing Marlin type songs (one of our many side projects that now has 3 albums and a 10 year history) and play and record them with our favorite musicians. "Wits End" is the result.
You can check out our previous 2 albums and other albums by us and our friends at the BRAILLE RECORDSs site connected to
www.plan9music.co.nz
We are based in Wellington New Zealand Aotearoa and as well as working as screen composers we still play in various bands such as "The Labcoats", "The village idiots" and more recently perform the show "the songs of Kurt Weill" in a six piece band featuring many of the "Wits end" musicians and fronted by the vocal talent that is Janet Roddick.
We aren't planning any immediate gigs with Thrashing Marlin as our extended band is spread far and wide ( Wellington,South Island sheep station manager, Rome, Wanaka, Australia Indonesia Oh year and Jonny has gone to pursue his love of throat singing in Mongolia) but check out our blog to see what we are up to with our other projects which we will update here.
Some of the talent featured on "Wits End" is Janet Roddick(Six Volts) David Long(Muttonbirds) Chris O'connor(Don McGlashan)Jonny Marks and Anthony Donaldson(The Village idiots) Riki Gooch(Trinity Roots, Neil Finn, Bic Runga etc etc) Jeff Henderson(Happy bar host and multi mentalist)British blues and avant guard legend Mike Cooper(Howling Wolf, Sun House) TimPrebble(sound designer extroadinaire) and some great post humus vocal samples from Len Lye.
To make up for our lack of a live presence with Thrashing Marlin we are adding some video to give you a bit of visual stimulation ( and bacause it's fun) We will be uploading more as we finish them.
Thrashing Marlinasaurus our lost bretheren.....Oh when can we eat delicious leaves and roam the plains again like in the days of yore?
'Tis us Bossasaurus with more remix hotness excavated from the hottest volcanoes around. This time we've got a Redman and Method Man remix of "Dangerous MC's". Please come on over to our page and check it out. We will be making it available for free download very soon.
Hey guys, We're mishing up from Invercargill to play at Hole In The Wall tomorrow night (Friday 29th of May) with our good friends Fire & Intergracia. So for some of the heaviest grooves in the country come check out some southern chug! Hope to see you there! Cheers Osmium
Wat up fam, I'm not usually into the whole mass commenting thing, so apologies if this comes across like some spam...but it aint! Just in case you haven't checked it yet...here's my new video for Whoa (remix with PNC & Flowz). Directed by Shahir Daud with a tiny $6000 budget and a solid 7 months in post production! Lemme know what you think and feel free to help a dude out by linking your friends up if you think they might like it!
What’s Crackin’ Thrashing Marlin ? We’re hitting back our myspace folks to let you know that your prayers have been answered. What prayers, you may ask. Well, today my friends, the good reptiles over at Bossasaurus (namely the ones writing this message) have teamed up with Murs (Living Legends, Def Jux, 9th Wonder, etc.) to, for the first time ever, offer you a taste of our music with an emcee over them. If you hate emcees and were feeling the tranquility of our un-defiled instrumental works than we sincerely apologize for our critical error in judgment. Otherwise come on over and check out:
We hope you enjoy it. If you don't come thru and talk that sweet smack.
Hey guys, We're on our first New Zealand tour all the way from Dunedin & we'll be in Wellington at Hole In The Wall this Saturday the 2nd of May smashing out some monster grooves with Riverblind.
What's Good Thrashing Marlin ? You are receiving this because you left Bossasaurus a comment in the last 4 months saying something nice(we are working on getting back to people on an individual basis...sorry this isn't it). We were flattered by your comments and wanted to invite you back to our page to listen to our new music, download our 16 minute Mega-Mix, and check out our new video. If this message annoys you in anyway we apologize and invite you to write us angry messages. Thanks for reading...we hope you enjoy. -Bossasaurus
I don't know if you were ever Able Tasmans' fans, but Peter Keen just posted a wee video to a Humphreys and Keen tune. The footage, no doubt taken while living on his research vessel, reminds me a bit of what raw Thrashing Marlin footage must look like.
Graeme Humphreys/Hill and Peter Keen have entered the interweb age. Catch them on myspace and at facebook. All the best, Tricia
Thank you for the link to the new Red Bear installment. I feel like proclaiming "Red Bear, I hardly know ye!" He deals with love, intrigue, deception. Such an interesting life he leads!
Matt and I did catch Don McG open and play with the Crowdies. He was lovely and amazing and played no less than 12 different instruments. He really let his hair down and played it and sung it as a member of the CH band. The gentlemen from the Conchords were there, too, and it was neat to see them be excited about chatting up Don. Harry Sinclair didn't make it to the shows because he was on his way to China to perform. He did send his fiancee.
We met Fiona Black, a lovely woman from Vancouver's Capilano College. She was there to get Don McG to think about coming to Vancouver to perform. I hope it's okay, but in a follow up email I told her that Plan 9 and Dan Adams were two folks on the NZ festival circuit she needed to catch if she ever made it to your fair shores. I also included links to your sites.
Hope the May recording went well. Please let us know when it's out. If you ever make it to our not so fair shores, please bring Red Bear and think about doing a wee show. We are now accustomed to rocking out with Welli performers.
Hope the Kurt Weill Festival Shows went really well!
I am having a Front Lawn/Six Volts moment as I've just heard that Don McG is opening for Crowded House in Americker, with the last show being in Los Angeles, where Harry Sinclair now lives, and, where I hope to catch them all. What a great CD "Songs from the Front Lawn" is.
In other news, I am fairly sure Welli band Over the Atlantic will be playing my living room in a few weeks. Ah yes, but when will it be Thrashing Marlin or at least Red Bear's turn?
