“There’s new life to count on with a new direction.”.
So go the lyrics of “The Name of the Game,” the closing track of Three by Five’s debut record, Cartographers EP. Coincidentally, this song in particular was the first of many that the Long Island based trio has ever written and completed as an official band. Three by Five combines the efforts of Chris Ortiz (vocals and guitars), Sean Rubin (vocals and basses), and Tom Corsaro (drums and percussion); a young group of friends who banded together during the latter half of their high school career in 2007. Ortiz and Corsaro were originally composing and performing original music with a local metal band, Under Surveillance.
Following the dismemberment of Under Surveillance, the two recruited the help of Rubin to create a serious rock trio with a goal of blurring the lines between different types of musical genres. The band’s name was inspired by a John Mayer tune, but with a little more thought, one might realize that three by five is also the dimensions of a small photograph. And with that comes the old saying: “a picture is worth a thousand words.” If you haven’t gotten the metaphor yet, then it should go that Three by Five delivers a massive sound with a bigger bite than their small numbers in personnel suggest. Whatever music you may listen to; be it rock, hip hop, pop, jazz, blues (and maybe a teensy little bit of metal), you can find a big handful in Three by Five’s full length album:
Set Me Ablaze and Make Your Escape .
There’s new life to count on with a new direction, and this trio is ready and set to take on whatever journey the music world throws their way.
