Singers and musicians Amy Amatucci and Mary Perisho, along with guitar and banjo-master John Lanford, and bassist Don Geesling, are THREE PENNY UPRIGHT. Since arriving on the music scene via Tulsa, Oklahoma, the band has become a favorite everywhere from coffeehouses to honky-tonks. It was only a few ago that the group was discovered opening for Loretta Lynn. A reviewer from Tulsa World was at the performance at Cain’s in Oklahoma, and took notice of the opening band. The reviewer wrote, “With their tight two-voice vocals and acoustic Rockabilly vibe…they often evoked an earlier Country-music era themselves. Their vocalizing was first-rate…a nice job by all concerned.”
Amatucci and Perisho named the group Three Penny Upright as a symbol of their humor and tongue-and-cheek attitude in both their stage presence and their music. The name is meant to evoke a long-gone era when pennies could buy a good time and “upright” could mean instruments or back-alley shenanigans. The two take their musical cues from classic Country, Bluegrass, Rockabilly, and a little Jazz, and blend the style with their witty, sassy, and sometimes heartbreaking lyrics.
In 2006, the band released its first self-titled EP recording. The seven-song release features Three Penny Upright doing what it does best – making music with long melodies, sweet harmonies, dazzling strings, and lyrics.
