THROB, the weekly that started it all. The only Freestyle weekly in Miami 8 years ago, was turned away by almost every club; as promoters and venue owners and (some) radio stations looked down and sneered at its format and roots to 80's Freestyle and Electro Dance music. Not seen as a "TRENDY" format at the time, it became a true indie weekly event. Sharing the cone hat of shame that the Freestyle format has worn for many years, as an underground club outcast, the night was only to be embraced by the now defunct CLUB OZONE in South Miami; a gay club filling the space of what once was CLUB Manhattan's in the 1980s. As did the original Manhattans room, THROB filled the dance floor with rare 80's Dance genres and foundation anthems, creating a weekly hang out for PURIST and hard-core industry Freestyle heads; especially those looking for new sounds to infuse their mixes and productions. THROB, with its name alone reflecting the throbbing, bouncing bass lines from Freestyle and Electro, at the same time paid homage to HEARTTHROB, a subname for the Freestyle sound. For several months the weekly catered to a mixed and diverse crowd, it said it even resurrected and attracted spirits haunting the South Miami venue; victims of shootings and cocaine OD's from the Manhattan days in the 80's.
In time the weekly closed its doors to concentrate on productions for its record label division, DESTUNE Records. After many years THROB resurrected its presence in 2007 by hosting its sister event the Tai Shan Ball, during Winter Music Conference in the Super Wheels Skating center roller rink. The same location that was known as the legendary Hotwheels skating rink, a teen disco that served as a key location for the classic Miami Freestyle movement in the 1980s. After many years, many different parties and concerts, many Tai Shan Ball's, many Freekstyle's at the Laundry Bar and other affiliated events; the weekly had arrived at a residence inside the Superwheels venue in 2007. Currently, at a time where the tables have turned and everyone had now decided to claim a classic Freestyle and 80's night. One thing is for sure,THROB TAKES IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL! Always to regulate and rise up with higher standards, in the name of the NEO FREESTYLE/Electro generation and Disco Truth.
THROB merges the underground club music recording industry with the world of roller rinks and night clubs to debut the next era in Miami Freestyle and Electrodance club nights. The night serves as a platform for both developing and established vocal performing club music artist and DJs, and also involves hosting fashion shows, record label release parties, movies, product release parties, magazine, publication release parties and other events. The THROB format made its debut at the Tai Shan Ball 6, Freestyle Dance Industry showcase during the 2007 Winter Music Conference, and successfully served those looking for alternatives in music and night life. THROB gives a new weekly home to Miami's Neo-Freestyle dance and Electro-Dance community, at a time when dance clubs are infused with 80's freestyle and italo disco driven Electro House music.
THROB's format was heard around the world with its LIVE web RADIO BROADCAST via www.freestylemusic.com.Its Format was also heard on Miami's FM Dial 105.5, where MASTEMIX Saturday (Now Mastermix sessions on wepa.fm/1club.fm)was heard all around Miami, being the first radio show in South Florida debuting both Neo Freestyle and Dance music as well as rare classics. At the time JONPITO hosted as DJ/producer Jorge Ojeda resided on the turntables. Ojeda known for his radio work, starting at an early age of 15, in classic Miami radio Rhythm 98 FM and SUPER Q; also for spinning in legendary clubs like CLUB1235 (now mansion), the original HOTWHEELS to current Tai Shan Ball 1-9, Freekstyle, Laundry Bar, Score, Salvation/1771 and others.
Ojeda continues mastermix sessions on Friday and Saturday Nights on wepa.fm along side J-coolsuave.THROB Miami will soon have its own show with JONPITO on wepa.fm/1club.fm (Sunday Nights) to a market network of 9 million listeners worldwide.Starting Fall 09.Meanwhile a new club residence will also be announced in fall 09 (along with sister party, WILDE's CHILD) where the main rooms will cater to mixed crowds and continue to be filled with the sounds of Neo-Freestyle,Nu-Disco, Electro and Tribal House, Breaks,nu-rave, Electroclash future classics, Baile Funk,90's trip hop, techno funk, early 90's rave classics, 80's classic Electro Funk,Freestyle, Hi Nrg , Italo Disco, Miami Bass & more.
THROB and Tai Shan Ball ,like all people, has its own personality. Throb, over the years has seen allot and changed allot, yet always strived to be different. In essence a continuation of the foundation of what FREESTYLE music and it's scene really was; a free form of art, creating music and a scene, infusing elements of many people, many styles, many arts and many cultures.
THROB
FREESTYLE FACTS: Originated in both New York and Miami during the early to late 80s, Freestyle dance music was the evolution out of the Electrohiphop scene of the early 80s and served as a voice and movement for young English speaking Latin Youths in the major US Cities, bringing an identity to the electro dance underground. It was the rebirth of American Dance music after the Disco sucks movement and claimed back Dance music for the U.S.A after a European NewWave/Dance stronghold. Starting off as the evolution and mutation of American Electrofunk, records would span from those layered over basic dance beats ("washing machine" or disco beats) or straight up syncopated electro-hiphop beats, but be driven and branded by its bouncing baselines, melodies, vocal edits, harmonies, crashes, rifs, cowbells, hand claps, clave, chord changes, syncopated hi hats, Afro-Latin percussion & Caribbean influences (salsa, soca, calypso, etc)as well as influences from Jazz/Latin Jazz.BPM's ranging from the predominant street level 122bpm to even the more energetic dance floor oriented 135 pbm (depending on the region).
The earliest records would predominantly feature male and female African American vocalist stemming from previous Disco, Soul and Gospel backgrounds and influenced R&B and Pop records of that post disco time period. Most containing records inflicting strong emotion and powerful vocal work, while new electronic and alien sounds and innovations in production work would revamp the club world with a reconstructed Disco/Club sound for the 80's.The Freestyle records of the earliest years,82-84, would also hold the key relation and bridge between Freestyle, HI NRG and Italo Disco; as well as a trans Atlantic relation between Europe and North America's dance scenes. Unfortunately many of those vocalist, groups and producers of the early prototype/foundation period have been overlooked by mainstream history and still not given their credit. Although the first Freestyle records can be traced to the hands of names as Arthur Baker, John Robbie, Jellybean Benitez, Chris Barbossa,Latin Rascals (Tony Moran & Albert Cabrera),Little Louie Vega, Miami's Lewis Martinee,Ish, Avy Gonzales, Amos Larkins,Pretty Tony and others; many producers and artist as well as their records flourished out of other scenes as synthpop,Italo Disco, Hi NRG, New Wave,Rap and R&B. In the process bringing in influences and threads of creativity to a scene that would be named for its free form of creativity and improvisation in its production, its dancing to its entire structure. In return having a strong Latin/ spanglish (English and Spanish mix ) vocal and musical influence in every scene from R&B, Italo disco and Hi NRG of the early/mid 80's. FREESTYLE would get its name from Miami producer Pretty Tony Butler, whose 1983 group of the same name, Freestyle Express =Freestyle= Freestyle Evolution, also reflected the structure and formula of the scene.
The term "freestyle" popularized in the late 80's as an easier way to "market" and give a name to a scene and sound ,that from its conception and birth, was always hard to define. This move would also include its previous names: Dance, electro-dance, Latin pop, Miami sound or most used Latin HipHop Dance. Although dominated by Black and Latino urban cultures, it found a way of rising out of Latin, Black and Gay dance floors and served as a wagon for other genres (Hi-NRG, Italo imports and early house and HipHop) and got dance music back on the mainstream radio during the mid to late 80s; breaking down barriers between many musical markets while creating opportunities for a new generation of youth in the record, radio, television and dance club industries. The early freestyle scene, best described as the music, at many times over lapping with other scenes and sounds; in the process serving as a glue that kept a generation of many scenes together. It's vocal artist and DJs, the most musical open-minded and able to adapt to any influences and environments (underground or commercial).
Although the mainstream concentrates on the Freestyle of the late 80's and early 90's, Freestyle's blood lines span way before and way after. Covering over two decades and a half. From a basic early 80's "Remember What You Like" by Jenny Burton and "99.5" by Carol Lyne Towns to a 90's "Let the rhythm set you free" by Nadine Renee, "Craving Your Love" by Fiori/Samantha and "Passion" by K5. From a 2005 "Its time" by Ferry Corsten and "Hold Me Touch Me" by W.I.T. (Larry Tee/ Aurther Baker) to a 2008 Armand Van Helden's "I Want your Soul" and "All Night" Feat. Laroca. From a 2009 Armand Van Bueren "In And Out Of Love" Euro release to an American based Vanessa Conde "Falling Into Love". In addition, a string of talented new generation of FREESTYLE/Electrodance artist such as Vanessa Conde, D'luna, Sharyn Maceren, Miles Petty, ELISSA,Jessica Marie, Christina Marie, Jennifer Glass,Mari P and many others have cultivated their own independent followings and established a new community of Freestyle artist,DJs and labels. By 2010 one can also include all the Electrofunk/Freestyle material that has been flooding out of the Hiphop/R&B scenes. Due to the Neo-Freestyle & Nu Disco presence in the underground club scenes of present day Breaks, Trance, Nu-NRG,Nu-Disco, Electro House,Tribal House and hipster parties; classic 80s Freestyle and Hi nrg influences are found in current music and fashion at an international pop level again. In 2008 - 2009 House music continues to soak up electro funk, Italo disco, Hi NRG and Freestyle influences, at times without even knowing it. Others across the world now have a trend of buying classic Miami or New York Freestyle records and sampling or even reproducing them and releasing them as new innovations in the world of current underground dance music. Some have started or attempted FUNHOUSE themes/revivals to recapture that essence that housed that mix of early 80's fashionistas, Artist, b-boys/b-girls,graph kids,Gays, Blacks,Latins, bohemians and hipsters that crammed the original Funhouse, Roseland and Roxy In NYC and Miami's 1235, Casanovas,Manhattans,The Forest,Midway & Hotwheels nightclub/skating centers.
( note: The Funhouse and Jellybean Benitez is to Freestyle history, what the Paradise Garage and Larry Levan is to House Music.Sacred Ground.) This bringing attention to both the classic scene and the new generation of artist holding a new sound called Neo-freestyle/electro dance/Formula. A combination of current Urban electro, previous Electroclash, electro breaks and classic hi energy Latin freestyle foundations.

"If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn't. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn't be. And what it wouldn't be, it would. You see?
