He was killed by all the ho-hum, booty-ass music being produced in the modern era. I mean, really folks, what-the-fuck-ever happened to people PRAISING you for coming up with something different? Something sincere? Creating something NEW?
I recently entered a producer battle and found that I wasn’t actually battling producers. I was battling Kanye West and Swizz Beats cover producers.
Does anyone remember when Hip Hop was something new? Thow your hands in the air. Now wave them like you just don’t care. All that shit right there...
I love Kanyé West...
I love Li’l Jon...
I love Chad & Pharelle...
I love RZA...
I love Timbaland...
I love Alchemist...
I love all kinds of producers out there, beit hip-hop, pop, R&B, Techno, D&B, whatever, but guess what? they have already expounded on their styles. They have already crossed over. Do they need a booster club? Hell no they don’t. They’ve already expanded the production game with their new styles of beat management.
D.J. Dainja of Psyche Origami said, "Murph, your beats are AMAZING, but motherfuckers just aren’t ready for your style of music. You are on some futuristic shit and it will be years before people actually get what you’re talking trying to relay."
Se7en, of OutKast "Roses" fame, said, "Man, I been listening to these three CDs I had in my car for the past month or so and I’ve been jamming out to them... i just realized today that they are YOUR C.D.s Man, you on some shit that niggas ain’t even understanding yet. Holla at me, I wanna work with you on some shit."
Yet, when I turn around, I hear M.C.s and singers that all want something, that sounds like somebody, somewhere. Can you do that? In the past, I thought I could, but everytime i tried to do it, the shit would self-destruct in my face.
Those days are OVER. Never again will I change my production style to fit another person’s idea of what a good producer should sound like. if you like my music, and I know a lot of people do, you will adapt to it. you will grow with me. But if your aim is to sound like some shit that’s already out, forget about it... if you want a Kanyé West beat, go scrounge up a million dollars and get HIM to do it for you.
And for the record, a REAL singer... A REAL MC, A REAL poet, can perform over ANY style beat. if you can’t, then maybe you should rethink your mission, cause there will be times in your career when you are going to have to...
I love music entirely too much to let it influence me. Miles Davis didn’t, John Coltrane didn’t, Charles Mingus didn’t, Quincy Jones didn’t, Full Force didn’t, And if those great musical minds didn’t do it, I’ll be damned if I do.
I love music so much I count the BPMs of people walking across a hard surface. I count the BPMs of my windshield wipers and beatbox over them when I’m driving in the rain. Most people sing in the shower, I produce symphonies in my head involving rain and waterfalls; the acoustics are perfect for a low guttural bass, a spit snare, and cymbal.
Check my CD collection if you don’t believe me. But, if you do, bring a cot, cause you’ll be there for a mighty long time. And don’t bother asking me who Beady Belle is, or Katapolt is, or M.I.A is, or Maceo Parker... Don’t ask me why I have Fleetwood Mac or Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Iron Maiden or System of a Down, The Wallflowers or Oasis.
