The evolution of Thurlow began in 2006, when Augustus Green (guitar/bass/vocals/beats) and Jacqueline Caruso (keys/vocals), spontaneously starting jamming and writing songs together in Gus's parents' basement. The two were working on solo material at the time that they both felt was stuck in a rut. When they began to fuse their styles and collaborate on their songwriting, without any pretense or forethought, the music came alive. And thus began their musical journey as Thurlow.
The first incarnation of the band featured Green on electric guitar, Caruso solely on vocals, Michael Hausmann on drums and a revolving door of bass players (with Sean Young featured on the Cassette Tape EP), pounding out straight-forward indie rock tunes. While the collaboration between Green and Caruso still rang true, there was something missing in the execution and the band quickly dissolved.
Over the past year and half, Thurlow turned into a duo, as Green and Caruso moved back to the DC area to re-group. Through allowing themselves the time and space to develop their true sound and shake up the songwriting process, "Training Wheels" was born.
Released in January of 2009, "Training Wheels" fuses influences spanning from the psychedelic rock of the Beatles and Jefferson Airplane, to Portishead-inspired trip-hop beats, sprinkled with Beck-like song structure. Whether you are looking for the musical exploration of isolation and mortality, or to simply grab onto a toe-tapping hook, "Training Wheels" covers it all.
The band has recently relocated to Los Angeles where they will be promoting the release of their debut album.
