Joel & Nick make the noise... everyone at UNKNOWN THEATER makes it possible.
Influences
Well, for better or worse, we're probably influenced in some way by every "major-label" band we've ever heard throughout our lives (whether it be the awesome bands we love and buy CD's of compulsively and who we probably subconsciously rip off from time to time, or the horrible bands we despise and hear 20 times a day on the radio and strive to be nothing like... and who we probably subconsciously rip off from time to time), BUT, most recently and most importantly we are influenced by and draw inspiration from all the incredibly talented local and independent artists we've had the pleasure of sharing the stage with on these Thursday nights. As of now that list consists of:
Ultraviolet Astronaut
The Novelists
Jeff Ramuno
Starla Baker
Robyn Klock
Phil Rodriguez
Declan Zimmerman
Cydney Robinson
Zen Boy & Karma Girl
Hand to the Plow
Andy Ellsworth
Derek Yellin
American Eclipse
Whitney Lockert
Outer 7th
Kristy Hanson
Waiting 4 Wyatt
Solar Wimp
The Funk-O-Matics
Girl
Ragan
Cosmic Starfish
Danger Trio
SmitteN
The Marches
Hi y'all. We're ELEMENOPY, hosts of Unknown Theater's residency event "Thursday's With ELEMENOPY" (A.K.A. Effing the Genre Police Weekly), which works out nicely, because it would just be goofy to have someone like Ryan Seacrest host an evening called "Thursdays with ELEMENOPY." Not to mention he's a douche bag.
Anyway, if you are unfamiliar with our weekly residency at Unknown Theater, please feel free to read all about it in this very loooong blog. If you don't have time for heavy reading, here is the deal in a nutshell: Every Thursday, we host a free evening of eclectic music and art at Unknown Theater, featuring a live performance by ourselves and at least one other musical act, plus a variety of other forms of artistic expression, including (but not limited to): painting, dance, film, comedy, poetry, etc. These nights are intended to be an alternative (for both artists and patrons) to succumbing to the greedy and apathetic music machine that drives so many other Los Angeles area clubs. There is no out of pocket expense for anyone to come enjoy the night... all you need is a love for the arts and a desire to hang out with cool people and hear some good music. There will never be a cover charge, there is always plenty of free parking, your drink tab won't require you to take out a second mortgage, and artists are given free reign over the length and content of their sets. Unknown Theater is the antithesis of everything we all hate about LA venues, and we hope this residency can help revolutionize the way LA experiences live music and art.
We are looking to book ambitious and unique expressionists of all kinds. Our motto has always been "Ef the Genre Police," and that is our philosophy for booking guests. We welcome any and every kind of music, so as long as you are sincere and devoted to sharing your art, we are interested in having you be a part of this movement with us. If we book you, we won't ask you to sell pre-sale tickets or demand a minimum draw, or put any of the other typical LA restrictions on you. Of course, we certainly hope that you will aggressively and passionately promote the show to all of your friends, fans, and family members as the greatest night of entertainment they will ever experience. (Because, well, it will be... especially with YOU on the bill, right? Heck yes.)
Finally, we do ask this one small favor of y'all: If we book you, please come and be a part of the scene NOT ONLY on the night that you are scheduled to perform, but also in the weeks before and the weeks after. This will only work if everyone supports each other. We don't want to simply book artists and shuffle them on and off the stage week after week as would happen at most other lame LA venues. Instead, we hope to build a community of like-minded, creative, supportive, and generally bad-assed mofos, and get people involved in the exciting landscape of local and independent music and art. And hey, did we mention it's FREE?!?!
Interested in being involved? Just drop us a message here, add us as your newest and bestest myspace friend, spread the word to everybody you know and their mother, and most importantly... COME ON OUT THIS THURSDAY!
