General
Music, reading, writing, languages, dancing, singing, colouring, films, TV, scary clowns, socialising, etc. There are a lot of other things I like (like needlepoint, making films and songs via the computer, drawing, etc.) but I never seem to have any time for these things anymore.
Music
Anything intense, with a heavy beat and is emotionally moving, no matter what the genre. My ultimate favourite band since 1995 and still going strong is Pet Shop Boys, but generally I've been listening to a lot of Brasilian music lately, thanks to George's influence - particularly Carlinhos Brown and Daniela Mercury. Other classic and recent favourites include: Depeche Mode, Unklejam, Nelly Furtado, Erasure, The Cure, New Order/Joy Division/Electronic/Monaco etc., Rick Astley (haha), Bauhaus/Love & Rockets/Tones on Tail/Peter Murphy etc., Air, Kraftwerk, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins, Camouflage, Les Rita Mitsouko, Sven Vath/OFF, Bodies Without Organs, Beborn Beton, Pop Will Eat Itself, Oingo Boingo/Danny Elfman, Sparks, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Skinny Puppy, Talking Heads, Prince, Einsturzende Neubauten, Shamen, Falco, Talk Talk, Tears for Fears, Ace of Base, Paula Abdul, Red Flag, Mesh, William Orbit, Gang of Four, Public Image Limited, The Orb, Chopin, JC Chasez (again, hahaha), Front 242, Enigma, Legendary Pink Dots, Bootsy Collins, George Clinton, a lot of Russian things, a lot of Hungarian things, a lot of things from lots of other countries, a lot of old EBM, a lot of old trance, a lot of cheesy old Eurodance before it all got lame, lots of New Wave, post-punk, etc. And I will listen to basically everything, whether I love it or not, so long as it is NOT 'Big Yellow Taxi' by Joni Mitchell, The Knack's 'My Sharona', that Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel song 'Don't Give Up', or most things by Human League. I cannot being to describe the negativity I feel towards those songs, for some reason! And I've got a goal to find something I love from everyone country in the world - I've checked off about 65 countries so far; please do feel free to share any gems you can think of!
Movies
Absolutely tons - The City of Lost Children, Dark City, The Last Unicorn, Dead Alive, Evil Dead 2, The Moon Is Blue, Aladdin, Robin Hood (the Disney one - NOT the Kevin Costner one!), Donnie Darko, The Music Man, Phantom of the Opera, Planet of the Apes, The Big Lebowski, Alfred Hitchcock films, It's a Wonderful Life, The Prestige, etc. Lots of sci-fi and old B-movies, Bollywood films, old out-of-date horror that's a bit unusual and fantasy-like or has enough bad acting in it to be hilarious, etc. (or, as George put it, that's 'not horrific') - I've gone off modern horror (too extreme/realistic for me)...and actually, modern comedies tend not to make me laugh, either...I haven't watched a lot of modern movies, in general. But I love being swept away by something wildly imaginative, or laughing at the hideously atrocious. The thing is, George and I collectively own somewhere around 3-400 movies, 1,000 books and about 1,500 CDs, so I really don't know how to fill in these kinds of profiles.
Television
Lost, Desperate Housewives, Doctor Who, Red Dwarf, America's Next Top Model, One Tree Hill, Days of Our Lives (back in the day, anyway), Spaced, I'm Alan Partridge, Life on Mars, The Avengers, Dark Shadows, The Apprentice (UK version), Star Trek: The Next Generation, Batman the Animated Series, X-Men the Animated Series, old episodes of MST3K, Sifl & Olly, home shopping/infomercials, documentaries, music videos, etc.
Books
Some books that had me completely engrossed and enamoured from the first page to the last - 'Crime and Punishment' by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, the complete 'Three Musketeers' trilogy by Alexandre Dumas, 'House of Leaves' by Mark Z. Danielewski, 'The Time Traveler's Wife' by Audrey Niffenegger, 'His Dark Materials' by Philip Pullman, 'We Need to Talk about Kevin' by Lionel Shriver, 'The Beach' by Alex Garland, and 'An Anthropologist on Mars' by Oliver Sacks.
My favourite writers are Fyodor Dostoevsky, Margaret Atwood, Lionel Shriver and Elizabeth Flock.
Heroes
I don't know if there's anyone I'd call a 'hero' exactly, but I've got a huge amount of reverence for Oliver Sacks, for being so human and trying to promote the concept that having a neurological disorder that most people don't understand does not automatically make you disabled and unhealthy, because it makes you who you are and gives you so many things others wouldn't have, without the condition. He was the first person to make me proud of having Tourette's Syndrome, and I'll always be anonymously grateful to him for that.
