The person that originally wrote this...I took it from my myspace group Bass Players

' Now this was forwarded to me from my guitarist (who has done gigs on bass) but this is from a forum on Fender's site for gigging players. I guess some guitarist was debating whether or not to take a gig as a bassist. While I guess there were opinions all over the map here's what a fellow bassist had to say & I think he did a good job of clearing some things up for them guitarists...
"But if you can separate a little from your guitarist persona and are willing to look at it as a completely different instrument, you'll probably find that many of the skills you've picked up in 20 years of guitar playing lend themselves very nicely to bass playing - albeit in a different, more restrained way. Chord-tone theory, scales, progression recognition, all come into play on bass. I've probably improved the most in my life on bass in the past 6 years or so since I got serious on learning some lead guitar theory regarding scales, modes and chords/progression structures - even though I've played bass in bands for the better part of 25 years. If you're also a drummer at heart (like I am), then locking into a tempo is as natural as breathing.
Unfortunately, many/most guitarists (in the HO of their rhythm section brethren) tend to play too much, too often, and waver all around the beat but rarely on it. You'll have to decide for yourself whether or not you even have the ability to become a human metronome. It also takes a healthy combination of humility and confidence to know your importance to the band and realize you'll virtually never get any recognition of it from laymen. Screw up or drop out on guitar? Not usually a big deal if the rhythm section continues on undaunted. Usually the only thing that will suffer is your ego. Screw up on bass or drop a beat on drums? Everyone in the club knows it. Worse - your ego AND the whole band will suffer.
You basically need balls of steel to know you'll be required to know every song inside/out and forwards and backwards, and that making mistakes is not an option. You'll also need the confidence to live with getting virtually no praise from the audience, even on your best night. The music has to be your fulfillment/gratification - and when it's good and you're solidly locked with a great drummer, it's a feeling no guitarist will ever experience and it IS stellar. Not every guitarist can make the transition and deal with all these variables though. You'll need to decide for yourself if you can. If you have serious doubts, don't do it. You'd probably be miserable." '

MPP is the largest marijuana policy reform organization in the United States. Founded in 1995, MPP works to minimize the harm associated with marijuana -- both the consumption of marijuana and the laws that are intended to prohibit its use. MPP believes that the greatest harm associated with marijuana is prison. To this end, MPP focuses on removing criminal penalties for marijuana use, with a particular emphasis on making marijuana medically available to seriously ill people who have the approval of their doctors.
MPP doesn't encourage marijuana use. But our failed marijuana laws cost taxpayers billions of dollars a year, keep police from focusing on real crimes, and fail to keep marijuana away from kids. We believe it's time for a new approach-- taxation and regulation.
Sincerely,
The Marijuana Policy Project
