Tiger Saw was founded in the coastal city of Newburyport, Massachusetts in 1999 by Dylan Metrano. Their early albums explored a beautiful, hushed, slowcore sound with prominent male/female vocal harmonies and cello. Their third album, ‘Sing!’ (Kimchee Records) introduced Tiger Saw as more of a collective, then including White Hinterland’s Casey Dienel, Dirty Projectors’ Nat Baldwin, K Records’ Jason Anderson, and many others. These songs were sing-alongs, written with, for, and about the community of like-minded friends with whom Tiger Saw had been sharing stages. The band at this time could be seen with over a dozen players, including a small choir. These simple, heartfelt songs celebrated friendship, community, and love in all its forms.
With their next album, 'Tigers on Fire', the band’s sound evolved into what they’d call “basement soul”, a DIY take on soul and rhythm & blues. Working with a horn section and extra percussionists, they sang of the everyday ecstasy to be found in sweaty house parties, old funk 45’s, and dancing all night to your favorite songs. It wasn’t exactly soul music, but it was a passionate love letter to soul music, and still undeniably and uniquely Tiger Saw.
Tiger Saw has toured extensively in North America and Europe, and is known for playing unorthodox venues from beach bonfires to treetop sing-alongs, as well as basements and barrooms from coast to coast. Tiger Saw has performed hundreds of shows with many bands, including Grizzly Bear, Kimya Dawson, Jens Lekman, Jad Fair, Laura Veirs, Magnolia Electric Co., Explosions in the Sky, The Gossip, and Man Man.
Hey, Dylan! Just heard that the book is out, can't wait to read it. If your tour brings you to the northwest definitely tell me and we'll set something up out here in Portland! Hope to see you soon!
