"tiger tales” is Austrias first retro soul band playing cluboriented 60s/70s style soul and funk in a contemporary way.
Their individual combination of high energy 60s soul from early R&B, Boogaloo, Southern Soul, Northern Soul, Motown with modern funk breaks displays a genuine approach to the genre that establishes a recognizable trademark.
Therefore their album in a way resembles a DJ set spanning across all these styles, yet always mantaining a coherence and sonic identity by the way in which it is done.
Although surprisingly raw and unconventional, due to their strong dynamic arrangements, catchy melodies and ironic lyrics their songs are compatible with both soul connaisseurs and a wider pop audience alike.
Since its first gig the band has played at many of Viennas top locations in only a short amount of time e.g.:
Rote Bar Volkstheater
Salon Leopold
Cafe Europa
Naschmarkt Deli
BIRDLAND
PORGY & BESS
1. Nov. 2008: tiger tales performed the first austrian alternative retro soul 7" vinyl single release party at the Salon Leopold.
If youre interested in how austrian alternative soul songs sound like, you may be in for a surprise....The Tales Tigers Tell!
With „Feels Good But Its Not“ the band already introduces its quite special way of “coming at you” by roaring out a strong groove-kicker that doesnt lack any of the elements of a timeless classic tune. Yet there is something different about it, as you recognize by closer listening: on one hand this fresh combination of riffs and hooks that nevertheless makes for a song which has not been there a million times before.
On the other hand, theres something about these lyrics that at first only slowly works its way into your mind as you are concentrated on banging your head to a true wildcat-beat. Until you suddenly realize in shock: this is not the story you were expecting to hear in your new favourite groovepiece! In fact, they must have been watching you for a long time already and this is their unsparing report about your everyday little or bigger selfmade deceptions:
Those riveting looks by the girl of your dreams that were proving she was definitely custom made for your soul, until you found that everyone in this room thinks the same way, those evenings when you let your heart be carried away by the waves of euphoria far into the dangerous (fire)waters of no return, or simply all those moments when it just felt so good to put off whats actually overdue already…or could it be, other people encounter the same phenomenons?
The first horn notes are not an austrian alpine tune but a quote from “Devil In Disguise”, that deals with the same lyrical topic, although much more harmlessly: people who act different than you would expect by their appearance, the more charming, the bigger the surprise. The harmonious line brought to an abrupt and mean end pictures the experience of being stabbed in the back in the middle of a hug without a warning.
The verse “rolls and tumbles” in frenetic anger about the disappointment upon a probably yet unplayed drum groove pattern to be contrasted by a straight quarter note beat in the chorus that gives the hook its necessary vigour, the indignation is therefore resolved by the clarity of the realization (“Its because youre a Backstabber…”). In between, the horns and choir depict the experience of being stabbed in several ways, until the break before the finale that builds up continually and transports a liberating amount of pain and melancholy in the end.
a typical “preacher” – like tune, providing you once again with the immortal facts of life: that its not about the pain but the way you take it. In quite a militant attitude the listener is encouraged to ride it out and transform it as it is nothing but a very intense form of energy. Inspiration for perseverance can be taken from any small child that wont stop to stand up after it fell down until it reaches its goal, a quality we sadly often forget in our later years (although one shouldnt be fooled to think children have a bigger discipline by nature…).
The hook and recognizability in this song is not in the melody but the incisive rhythm of the vocals (triplets) and drums. The C part with its disco like guitar and electronic inspired breaks at the end is definitely adding a modern touch to this tune.
