   About Timbre Drums
A BRIEF PROFILE OF TIMBRE DRUMS: We have been building our drums from start to finish in our home-based workshop since 1991. Each member of the household participates in the production of our drums. The drum hardware is hand-forged by a local blacksmith who is also a drummer. Our drum building grew out of a combined love of fine woodworking and drumming. We produce beautiful, yet durable drums with high quality sound. Our drums are enjoyed by professional and amateurs alike. We make African style Ashiko drums and Djun-djuns. Ashikos, such as the large ashiko’s which we made for Babatunde Olatunji. Ashiko’s have a wide range in sound which makes them very compatible with many different musical styles and traditions. Our hardware (a non-traditional, but modern convenience) allows the drums to be tuned to a particular pitch with just a few turns of a wrench. Djun-djuns are double headed bass drums used to accompany African rhythms. Our djun-djuns are laced with 3+4 mm climbing rope and headed with heavy cowskin (goatskin by special order). Each head is held in place by sturdy blacksmithed rings. For professional drummers, whose instruments have to withstand the rigors of the road, we recommend our maple, ash, and oak drums. Some of our custom drums are decorated with wood inlays which we make from a combination of native and exotic hardwoods. Ashikos & djun-djuns are custom made to order.
