While a lot of live recordings are a real disappointment,
here is a splendid live recording that will have you thirsting
for more. Recorded live in Paris, Timbuk3 plays a wide
variety of songs (including some previously unrealeased)
with a powerful backing band and shows what a live
recording can be. Having seen the band live many times
I approached this recording with cautiion. I was expecting
the usual flat live greatest hits package. Ha, was I wrong.
While Timbuk3 has since split up, this recording will always
serve as a reminder of how good they were to see live.

PAT MACDONALD'S STEEL BRIDGE SONGFEST '08 BUILDS BRIDGES OF CREATIVITY WHILE BENEFITING A HISTORIC DRAWBRIDGE
The Steel Bridge SongFest enters its fourth season, June 12 to 14, of bringing together musicians, songwriters, historic preservationists and music fans. The annual benefit for the Michigan Street Bridge has helped to raise almost $150,000 to save and maintain the bridge, and to build community awareness of the importance of preserving it.
This year’s festival will once again feature singer/songwriter Jackson Browne, musician/singer Jane Wiedlin of The Go’s-Go’s, and co-founder and musician pat mAcdonald. mAcdonald also will once again host The Construction Zone, a week-long workshop for 25 invited songwriters. With headquarters at the Holiday Music Motel at the approach to the bridge, the songwriters will find their collaborative partners with a rousing game of Spin the Bottle. The songwriters will perform at various venues around town during the week and record their original songs for possible inclusion on a CD. In past years some 120 songs have been recorded as a result of The Construction Zone. One CD is complete and on the market and another is in production.
Christie Weber, the other co-founder of the festival and president of Citizens for our Bridge, has been a tireless crusader for the preservation and enhancement of the bridge. The two-lane structure spans the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal in the central business district of Sturgeon Bay. Built in 1930, it is only one of two bridges of its type in the United States—an upper rolling lift bascule bridge. The 1,420-foot bridge is comprised of a counter-balanced, movable span and 12 concrete and steel truss approach spans. The bridge, a familiar sight for Door County vacationers and locals, is listed on the Wisconsin Register of Historic Places and recently was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
With the bridge as its beneficiary, the songfest has developed into much more than a concert. It celebrates live music, activism, historic preservation and creativity. More than 100 bands from across the country donate their services to help raise money and awareness for the bridge. Components of the event include:
• Take It To The Bridge. An all-day, benefit concert headlined by Jackson Browne on Saturday, June 14, at the Great Lakes Yacht Services boatyard. Jane Wiedlin of Go-Go’s fame will also appear.
• Take It Inside. Three nights of live original music will be featured in multiple venues around town, including all-ages shows.
• The Construction Zone. This component brings original songwriting into the festival mix. Twenty-five songwriters are invited for five days of intensive collaborative songwriting at the historic Holiday Music Motel. Writers are encouraged to write songs loosely based around the metaphor of a steel bridge. (The Construction Zone is for invited musical guests only.) A group of people associated with the SongFest recently purchased the motel to preserve it and form a year-round headquarters for songwriting workshops. An extensive restoration of the motel has added the recording studio, greened the building, and soundproofed rooms.

• The Steel Bridge Songfest CD. The best songs to come out of the songwriting workshops are captured on CD to be released the following year. Songwriters perform their original creations on the concert stages and at the venues around town and the live performances are recorded. Also, a custom-designed recording studio at the Holiday Motel is assembled for studio recordings. Steel Bridge Songs Vol. 1 is complete. Vol. 2 will have its release at this year’s festival.
mAcdonald’s and Weber’s efforts do not stop at fundraising. They are adamant about public education on the significance of the bridge and the efforts needed to keep it operating. Citizens for Our Bridge Inc. does ongoing work with federal highway officials and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to monitor bridge developments. The organization’s aim is to raise the money and awareness needed to preserve the bridge. The money raised is used in the educational effort and is collected in a special fund held by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and earmarked for expenses related to preserving and enhancing the historic bridge.

Timbuk3's music in outer space - the highest rotation an earth-bound artist can achieve.
Timbuk3 disbanded in 1996. Six years later they were inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame.
Both pat and Barbara have since gone on to pursue solo projects.

"My "official" recording career began in 1980 with the first Pat MacDonald & The Essentials album, Lowdown, released on 12" vinyl by Mountain Railroad Records, a regional indie headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. The closing song featured a cameo vocal by my girlfriend at the time, Barbara Kooyman, who also co-wrote the music. It was the album's only co-written song, ironically titled "Makin' It On My Own." A couple years later, with a growing musicality and greatly reduced surname, Barbara K joined The Essentials, playing fiddle and singing backup.
In the next two years, we married, had a child, and recorded the EP, Essentialist Propaganda before splitting off to form the duo Timbuk3 and moving to Austin, Texas. Our live rhythm section consisted of homemade drum and bass tracks played on a boom box.
That's when my "official" recording career took off. Our debut, Greetings From Timbuk3, contained a crowd-pleasing carryover from The Essentials days called "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades." It went to Billboard's top 20 and our little duo became an "overnight" success.
From 1987 through 1995, Timbuk3 made lots more albums but never followed up the hit. During that time, my main job (which I absolutely loved) was to keep cranking out songs to make albums to fulfill recording contracts. We might have sustained the initial success longer if we'd toured more, but we enjoyed home life and home recording, investing the recording advances into equipment for our backyard studio. And that follow-up hit was always just a hook-laden chorus away.
But I wasn't trying to write hits. And I wasn't trying to write a hit when I wrote the hit. I was just trying to write songs. Well, I knew I could write songs, but now I was trying to write albums, and enjoying my work, my "official" recording career.
After Timbuk3's breakup I moved to Spain and was provided the means to produce several more "official" projects for the German label, Ulftone. Many European critics said they were my best, most cohesive work yet. Troubadour of Stomp, my first U.S. label release in ten years (and perhaps my last label release ever) (I'm hating labels at the moment) has been getting similar reactions. No longer judged on "hit potential," I've now been accepted as an "album oriented" artist............... December, 2007
