Over the last 5 years, award winning "not for profit" Social Enterprise: Timeless Music Project has been lobbying for, making the case for and delivering projects aimed at drawing attention to and supporting Yorkshire's talented music industry. TMP has promoted Yorkshire music at events as far afield as Beijing, Tokyo, New York, Berlin, Cannes, Los Angeles and more. Established in 2004 projects include regional showcase CDs, events, festivals, campaigning and conferences.

In 2009 and thanks to Yorkshire Forward sponsorship, Timeless Music Project made the case for and organised the first ever live Yorkshire Music Showcase event at SXSW Music Conference, Texas on Saturday 21st March 2009 at the British Music Embassy venue - just before the slot traditionally held by Liverpool Sound City. Homegrown acts Wild Beasts, Sky Larkin, Talk To Angels, Rolo Tomassi and Paul Marshall played to packed music industry crowds. SXSW is regarded by many as the most important US based Music Conference relevant to British Music - helping to break acts including Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae and the Kaiser Chiefs to name a few. Yorkshire was also a regional partner in the British Music Stand at the Austin Convention Centre (again for the very first time). In 2010 and thanks to Northern Net sponsorship, Timeless Music Project coordinated another hugely successful Yorkshire presence at SXSW with another well received showcase CD and British Music Embassy concert featuring One Night Only, Grammatics, Middleman, The Crookes and Slow Club. Flying the flag for more outdoor entertainment, this is Huddersfield's (Kirklees) only Community Music Festival and was Guardian Guide 'pick of the week' 2 years running (2004 and 2005). Chocolate Fireguard Records and the Timeless Music Project presents 3 stages held in the lush surroundings of Ravensknowle Park, Wakefield Road, Huddersfield, UK. Acts have included the Lo Fidelity Allstars, The Freestylers, Fingathing, DJ Vadim's Oneself, Transglobal Underground, Fat City Records Sound System, Zion Train, LA Cedille, Panjabi Hit Squad, Four Day Hombre, Root Jackson, The Bays, Kava Kava, Jehst, Asaviour, DJ IQ, Iration Steppas, Dubdadda, The Selecter, Pee Wee Ellis, Snowboy and the Latin Section .. to name a few alongside a tonne of local bands. At the Timeless Festival we've had films, visuals from VJs, bands and DJs from Besançon (Huddersfield's twin town in France) workshops, much needed showcasing from local bands and in 2005 we developed a popular freestyle hip hop stage. After 4 successful years various nonsense and a lack of funding partners caused Timeless Festival to have some time out but touch wood it will be back! Show your support and join us.

YORKSHIRE'S MUSIC SCENE 2010

Once the home of synth-pop and goth, Yorkshire has, over the past decade, become the cradle of arguably the most exciting and diverse music scene in the UK. Corinne Bailey Rae, the Arctic Monkeys, Jarvis Cocker and the Kaiser Chiefs will already be familiar to an international audience. Along with, perhaps, the Pigeon Detectives, the Sunshine Underground, Richard Hawley and the mighty Wild Beasts. But there's a wealth of talent waiting to break through. In Leeds, for example, Pulled Apart By Horses, Sky Larkin, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Middleman, I Like Trains and Grammatics are all on the cusp of great things. Sheffield's musical renaissance continues with 65daysofstatic, Slow Club, the Black Spiders, Rolo Tomassi, Reverend and the Makers and the genre-defying DJ, producer and studio whiz Toddla T. From Wakefield comes the stunning wordsmithery of Skint & Demoralised and the sky-scraping indie of The Cribs, who now boast Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr among their number. Flying the flag for Huddersfield are dance-rock act Kava Kava; from Shipley, there's Britain's answer to Joanna Newsom, Blue Roses; up in the village of Helmsley One Night Only have been crafting their second album; in York Brit-poppers Shed Seven are active once more. As a county, Yorkshire boasts a staggering array of musical talent. Where better to discover some of it than at South By South West?"

Ever since Kaiser Chiefs' "Everything's brilliant in Leeds" T-shirt in 2004, music in wider Yorkshire has undergone an enormous resurgence. From the Kaisers to Leeds's Pigeon Detectives and chanteuse Corinne Bailey Rae, to Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys, the northern county houses some of the biggest and most influential acts in the UK. There's no such thing as a "Yorkshire sound", but the diverse acts do share an independent spirit. The Kaisers' Britpop-influenced anthems ignored prevailing fashions. Following the example of Sheffield pioneers the Human League and Pulp, Arctic Monkeys' blend of storytelling and guitars has provided a blueprint for bands around the nation. Although Leeds and Sheffield boast thriving club and jazz scenes, the diversity of sound is shaped by the annual influx of students, many of whom form bands like Dinosaur Pile-Up and Wonderswan, who are trailblazing an unlikely but exciting Yorkshire grungey sound. Sheffield continues to hit the headlines with Mercury-nominated singer/producer Richard Hawley and his Made In Sheffield album union with Tony Christie, another of the city's famous sons. But now, even smaller Yorkshire towns are producing bands: indie rockers the Cribs and Skint And Demoralised from Wakefield and One Night Only, the tiny North Yorkshire village of Helmsley's unlikely pop sensations. Maybe someone should change that slogan to "Everything's brilliant in Yorkshire."

Yorkshire's music scene is blooming marvellously. It's been on the up for over seven years now and shows no signs of slowing down. Four years ago Melvin Benn (Head of Mean Fiddler at the time, now Festival Republic) said in an interview on BBC Raw Talent Introducing; that Yorkshire was the new capital of UK music. Since then the infrastructure and expertise necessary to support this volume of new talent, has moved up from London or been created by local entrepreneurial enterprises. The result is sustained success for the regions artists such as Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, Pigeon Detectives, Corrine Bailey Rae, and a new interested market for the emerging talent in and around Leeds, Hull, York and Sheffield who will be rightly showcased at SXSW this year. Artists like Paul Marshall, Nat Johnson, Awash with Antler, Sky Larkin, Rolo Tomassi, Hungry Ghosts & Talk To Angels, to name a few of the many superb artists and bands that are rising up in Yorkshire this year. The success of the summer events like the BBC Introducing Stage at Leeds festival, Scarborough's Beached Festival, Timeless Festival, Huddersfield and the new stages at Beverley Folk Festival have focused media interest on Yorkshire and brought music audiences out to support these bands. The success is now on show and Yorkshire's future looks fantastic.
