I TIMI TANZANIA aka The DUBWARRIOR,
started playing music when I went to college in 1975
@ the age of 24yrs young.I attended New Mexico Highlands University
(Las Vegas,N.M.) My first band was formed as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix,
one of my major inspirations for playing the guitar.In 1981,
I entered a local talent show in Philadelphia,
which featured Reggae Music,and I won Best Male Vocalist.Around this time I formed my first Reggae band called Timi Dread & The Dubwarriors.Ialso recored my first single called No Guns (recored with the reggae band House of Assembly).The Dubwarriors played local clubs in the Philadelphia area,as well as Graterford Prison in Pennsylvania.We opened for major recording artists from Jamaica at various clubs throughout the tri-state region,for instance the Chestnut Cabaret and City Gardens(Trenton,N.J.)tHE DUBWARRIORS opended for The Wailers,The Mighty Diamonds,Eek-A-Mouse,Burning Spear and Mutabaruka(who we toured with in three cities,Phila-Baltimore,MD.-Washington D.C.)
1994 I formed a new group called Upper Dubland...We opened for Black Uhuru,Burning Spear,Dub Syndicate,Lucky Dube,& The Last Poets. In the year 2000,I recorded my first full compilation of electronic DUB @ Challenger Recording Studios in North Philadelphia called UPPER DUBLAND" and I recorded the vocal companion CD at the same time called The Healing of the Nation".Also around this time I put together a new group called Timi Tanzania & The Dubway Reggae Band w/Bert Harris on Bass,Pete Eishelman on Piano,Neil Simpkins on Drums,Timi on Guitar and vocals. 2006 I collaborated w/ The Dubsmith Productions to put together a My Space site(www,MySpace.com/Timi Tanzania)and live shows with the Dubsmith Sound System...Also in the year 2006,I entered the Philly Rising Talent Contest @ W.X.P.N.World Cafe and won second place(runner-up);in addition to the standings,I won studio time at Cheeks Recording Studio & Morningstar Recording Studio,where I recorded my next CD titled The Return of The Hippie".I also won a contest w/Disc Makers that has allowed me to release a new CD called ELECTRONIC".2008 Having reentered the Philly Rising Talent contest @ WXPN World Cafe this year,i’ve started to win again. Sidebar:I am a member of the Caribbean Festival Committee(stage coordinator)here in Philadelphia,that puts on the annual Caribbean Festival @ Penns Landing...I also teach Elementary Theory in Music...I’m a member of a couple of different groups such as The Urban Shamans and I YAHN I ARKESTRA...I also created my very own art project known in the inner communities as Brother Chuck’s Art Class!
