Deemed "One of the baddest sax players in the world" by funk legend Fred Wesley, Tim "Sully" Sullivan began his studies in music growing up on the Upper West Side, of Wisconsin. Graduating from Eau Claire Memorial High School, he enrolled at the Chicago College of Performing Arts for Jazz Saxophone. While living in Chicago, Tim was fortunate to actively work in the Jazz, Blues, Jam Band, Hip-Hop, and Free Improvised music communities, in addition to becoming an in demand woodwind player for theater work and comedy shows.
From the Windy City, Tim headed south to New Orleans, where he often played in the city's most recognized music venues including Tipitina's, Snug Harbor, House of Blues, Maple Leaf, and d.b.a.. Tim has had the great fortune to play with New Orleans music staples like Ellis Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Ivan Neville, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore, Alfred "Uganda" Roberts, Bill Summers, Henry Butler, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Irvin Mayfield, Kirk Joseph and Roger Lewis (Dirty Dozen Brass Band), David Torkanowsky, and more.
As a versatile woodwind player (Baritone, Tenor, Alto, and Soprano saxophones, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet) Tim has performed and recorded with a wide array of artists including Aretha Franklin, Fred Wesley, Umphrey's McGee, Roy Hargrove, Eric Krasno, Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), Robert Walter, Papa Mali, Dave Liebman Big Band, Toshiko Akiyoshi Big Band, Cab Calloway Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Curtis Fuller, Badal Roy, Clark Terry, Ron Miles, George Lewis, Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Jim McNeely, Billy "The Buddha" Dickens, and more.
Tim graduated with a B.M. in Jazz Studies from the Chicago College of Performing Arts where he apprenticed Mike Smith. In 2008, he graduated with a M.M. in Jazz Studies from the University of New Orleans where he studied with Ed Petersen and was a member of the school's flagship ensemble, the Louis Armstrong Quintet.
For nearly a decade, Tim has taken an active role in music education. In New Orleans, he worked in the schools and community through his involvement with the Louis Armstrong Foundation, the Tipitina's Foundation, and the International House of Blues Foundation.
Currently as a teacher for the WeBop! program and Academy Assistant for the Middle School Jazz Academy at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Tim has the incredible privilege to work with some of the coolest kids (and toddlers!) in New York City.
