The satirical movie where it's set in modern day and this guy leads a dull, humdrum existence working at an unfulfilling and tedious office job. The absurdity of the corporate simulacra is established early on. Then he learns that there is a whole other world (sometimes literally) outside work and he becomes a better, happier person or metaphor for Christ because of it. Also RUN LOLA RUN.
Television
The TV show where this guy gets lost in space and is trying to make sense out of his strange and sometimes lonely existence while trying to make it home. On the way he has a difficult relationship with a woman in the military who is emotionally inaccessible. There is a short character who cracks wise.
Also, all Britcoms that have seen a horrible translation to US television.
Books
The book where it's set in the future and this guy lives a dull, humdrum existence preserving the status quo. Then he meets a Free Spirit (in the form of a girl half his age or imaginary friend) who changes his life in a way that questions the status quo he upheld at the beginning of the book.
