About me: Hi my name is Amy and I work in Mozambique with AIDS orphans. We teach kids how to stay alive, how to keep their brothers and sisters alive, and how to make enough money to support themselves until they grow up. Mozambique is a beautiful country with wonderful people however it is being devastated by AIDS and HIV, and a lack of medical care along with malaria, cholera, and leprosy. In a country of 19 million people there are only 850 doctors of which 80% are in the southern most tip leaving 250 doctors covering an area twice the size of California. Colonialism has left its boot-print and many of the skills that we take for granted have been completely neglected or lost. Thirty years of war has also effected the economy and infrastructure of this land and its people. There is hope however we started TIOS in June 2005 with $150 and an idea and now have opened our third orphan skills center. Also our unique five components of HIV program is having tremendous success and gaining international attention. We are averaging 50% participants going to test for their HIV status within 2 weeks of taking our course. One person and one idea can make a difference in Africa.
