COMING UP ON TIRK;
JULY 2008 - HEDFORD VACHAL - ALAN VS GARY
Brad Vachal and Eric Hedford are two bearded colossi of the Portland, Oregon music scene; one a founding father of the dance scene in the Pacific Northwest with a CV that stretches back to the early nineties, the other an original member of the Dandy Warhols, the relatively sane band in the genius Dig movie. They’ve played together on and off together at Portlands’ legendary disco / funk basement party Soul Stew for nearly a decade, and now they’re making sweet music with each other for Tirk under the neatly assembled moniker Hedford Vachal.
The EP opens with six and a half minutes of live drums and bass driven cosmic funk in the shape of Alan vs Gary, all spacey synths and motorik rhythms riding a low slung groove to disco oblivion. ‘Toys’ strips things back with a raw bass and bleep groove providing the backing for Eric’s cooly delivered vocal, which is joined by a scronky Pfunk/drone riff in the last quarter, all of it combining for a winning Downtown NY 81 feel.
On the flip, Richard Sen (Padded Cell) turns in what has to be one his best pieces of work to date, which is a big claim, and we’re sticking to it. A classic disco style bassline drives along with all manner of trippy effects, bleeps and a vocodered version of Eric’s vocal, before giving way to the kind of wonky teknoid riffs the BBC Radiophonic workshop used to dream up, with the overall effect sounding like T Connection jamming with the Emperor Machine, a fantasy combo if ever there was one, and Pure Padded cell. All power to the Sen!
Drrtyhaze: ‘Dope tracks and the remix by Richard sen is slammin’

JUNE 2008 - MORTEN SORENSEN - START SOMETHING
Hailing from a small mackerel fishing village in southern Norway, 22 year old Morten Sorensen enjoyed a ten year spell spent in New York whilst his dad worked for the UN’ s international martitime commission developing a love of dusty old NY disco that was to irrevocably shape his future.
On returning to his home country two years ago to find the fires of nu disco burning brightly, Morten set about producing this, his debut ep for TIRK, with Groove Armada’s Tom Findlay lending a helping hand on production duties.
Nick Sarno: ‘Cool, really enjoy Visage’
Sean Brosnan: ‘Great package, “Woo Hoo” is the highlight.’

OUT NOW - TIRK035 - ARCHITEQ - BIRDS OF PREY EP
Hailing from Dundee, Sam Annand AKA Architeq, aged 22, treats us to a feast of deep and dubby electronic beats... live drums, twisted jazz chords, all warped, roughed-up and stressed, but sooo soulfully fused, somehow remaining coherent and leaving you waiting for the next trick.
Title track ‘Birds of Prey’ is a gloriously dubbed out and glitchy affair, with spliced and distorted guitars, bass lines to die for and driving drums… as live as they come.
Second track ‘Sleeping Bear Lament’... Well... Nothing but pure keys heaven interwoven with dirty elecro lines, muted soundscapes and easygoing rhythms. Catch the masterful use of his back tracking on the tape echo unit... bit of kit!
Into The Cosmos, is another foray into dubby waters, still with the crunchy off-beat drums, this time offset against lush, soulful strings and a burbling seascape of sounds.
Finally, ‘Packard’.... A driving little electro rhythm, spacey effects , cow bells, all weaving in and out of a silky smooth, soothing electro bass line. Dub to the max here... In a rocksteady style.
Laurent Garnier: "Perfect stuff"
Philip Sherburne: "really impressed with the architeq! that's a debut? holy hell... such a great sense of slow, stumbling funk. Beautiful work on the breakbeats, and killer sound design all around."
Rob Mello: "Quite a cosmic collection of tracks here! Favourite is Sleeping Bear Lament."
Adventures Close To Home: "Amazing"
Andy Whittaker: "Great find! This is one talented kid. Superb stuff, well up my street. Great beats, can't wait to hear more."
OUT NOW: TIRK034. 12" - ARCADE LOVER - FANTASY LINES
The new project from two of the top names in modern dance, Darshan Jesrani from Metro Area and Escort’s Daniel Balis.
This driving disco beat with smooth strings and brass sections stabbing away becomes an instant disco classic on the first play. Along with partner Morgan Geist of Metro Area, Darshan Jesrani has been hugely influential on the resurgence of disco in recent years, as has Daniel with his Escort imprint.
OUT NOW - CHAZ JANKEL - GET MYSELF TOGETHER HERCULES/TERJE REMIXES
With their glittering nu-disco star very much in the ascendency, we're pleased to have DFA favourites Hercules help kick of 2008 for Tirk with two totally different but equally exciting remixes of Chaz Jankel's 'Get Yourself Together'. First up is the 'Hercbump Mix', a joyous, bumping disco version, all sweet melodies fluttering keys and irresistable grooves. The 'Herchouse' mix strips things back with a moody, percussive Chicago 88' style work out, a classy after hours affair.
Along with the original LP version, the package also comes with a much sought after edit of 'Glad To Know You' from Norweigen legend Todd Terje, a lush dubbed-out reworking with the irresistible piano hook taking centre stage.
Philip Sherburne: "the hercules mixes are a particular treat -- i've been going ga-ga over his singles and new album, and these mixes confirm him as a formidable new talent. not surprisingly, the Todd Terje mix is also brilliant - so deep and swirly, and who doesn't love big chunky pianos like that?"
Skull Juice: "Loving the Hercules and Terje mixes of Chaz!"
Matt Walsh: "this Hercules mix is MASSIVE ACID!!!!!!"
Sean Brosnan: "The Hercules mixes are great…loving the dub – the best thing I’ve heard in ages. Will be supporting everywhere".
Rob Mello: "Happy to hear Mr Jankel hasn't lost his touch. This is a wonderful package and a great edit of Glad to Know You to boot!!"
Rioutous Rockers: "Herchouse mix and Terje edit are both fantastic!"
Alex Storrer: "like all versions. will play the hercules house mix & Terje edit in the club. excellent package, great 12"!!"
TIRK032 12" - SUGARDADDY - PIMP IN ME
As one half of Groove Armada, Tom Findlay needs no introduction – quite simply, they are one of the most bankable acts in dance music today with a catalogue of chart busting albums and singles. Tom’s Sugardaddy alias, is an outlet for his more club-focused material and first appeared on Tirk with “Love Honey”, a favourtite of house, electro and nu-disco DJs.
This release once again demonstrates Tom’s versatility. Lead track “Pimp In Me” an excursion into some serious house music – sounding like a long lost Sound Factory anthem given a modern twist. On the flip “Stripped To The Bone” is big room electro-disco and “Wack” offers a foray into mid-tempo, dubby, 80s-influenced electronica, - think the Peech Boys meets Jah Wobble and Ryuchi Sakamoto.
