When I was sixteen a girlfriend gave me an classical guitar. A sister gave me a Bob Dylan song book. I got myself a neck brace, a couple of harmonicas and a Mel Bay learn to play book. I taught myself Harmonica to go with the dozen chords I figured out and still play today.
