Agora at a glance
The 2007 calendar at Agora Gallery was heralded in on January 2 with two exhibitions in Chelsea. The first, a collective exhibition of contemporary art at its best, featured the works of Lebanese painter Emile R. Azar in a solo display called The Portal of Reconciliation . The Color of Motion exhibition showcased, among others, German artist Lalevga. Opening the same week was Beyond Borders: An Exhibition of Fine Art from Canada . Among them was Georgetown artist Lynda Pogue. On January 26 th Agora Gallery opened Pixel Perfect: The Digital Fine Art Exhibition which featured sixteen artists whose innovations have explored the creative potential of this powerful medium. Artists whose works were on display included T. Mikey, a master fantasist. Six Degrees of Abstraction, an exhibition that scrutinized the distorted reality originating from contemporary myth and deep-rooted traditional legend, was featured at Agora early in February. Included in the exhibition were works by social portrait painter Doug Bootes, among others. The exhibition explored the ability of the mind and eye to bend reality.
ARTisSpectrum Magazine volume 16, released in October 2006, proved to be a great success. A number of Agora Gallery's artists were more than pleased with the verbal expression the writers gave to their artistic accomplishments. Greek artist Giannis Stratis said of the article about his work that the writers analysis has the strength of touching my soul and the history of my place. Berenice Michelow, a South African artist living in the US, said that the author of the article documenting her work has understood my philosophy and direction perfectly. Sonya Veronica, who lives in Melbourne Australia, commented that her work was described so eloquently while Canadian artist Lynda Pogue said she was moved by the way in which the writer bridged her works with her heart. The next edition of the magazine that is set to become the voice of the Chelsea art community is expected to hit the newsstands on May 2007.

Standing up for kids
On December 18 th 2006, Agora Gallery was counted among the nine key sponsors at the Stand Up For Kids benefit held at the Time Warner Center . An evening of dancing, laughter and sharing accompanied by live jazz, an art exhibition and silent auction of works by prominent artists rang in the 2006 festive season high above Central Park . In spite of the opulence of an evening of champagne and cocktails, the beneficiaries of the event, the homeless children of New York , were foremost on the minds of the guests. Funds raised through the sale of tickets, a raffle and the art auction went to Stand Up For Kids, the largest volunteer-based non-profit in the US has been providing shelter, food and support to homeless children for more than 16 years. Agora Gallery is proud to be involved with an organization that aspires to help homeless and at-risk youths in the US .
Do it in the kitchen
Several female artists represented by Agora Gallery have responded to a request for their biographies to form the basis for a book about being an artist and a mother. Do it in the Kitchen: Inspiring Stories on Motherhood & Art, a collection of stories about mothers who explore their talent in their domestic environment amid the responsibilities of raising children, among other things, is being compiled by Los Angeles-based painter and art teacher Laura Peisner. Peisner, who previously ran Gallery X in Los Angeles recently converted part of her kitchen into an art studio. Her decision to set the culinary alongside the aesthetic in her home inspired her to seek the stories of other women who juggle the various roles that the creative-feminine commands. Peisner was overwhelmed by the response from Agora Gallery's artists and commended the gallery on its wonderful pool of talent. Peisner will be accepting drafts from artists until June 1 st 2007. Thereafter her project of editing and collating the book will begin.

Dangerous Beauty at the Chelsea Art Museum
An exhibition which investigates and challenges society's ideal of beauty and the designer body created and supported by mass consumerism is currently running at the Chelsea Art Museum . Dangerous Beauty, which opened on January 25, comprises a selection of work in a variety of media chosen to reflect a response to "dangerous beauty", an issue that recently reared itself at the Madrid fashion week where underweight models were banned from participating and the publicized death of a Latin American model from anorexia. The selected works examine the phenomena and implications of the current dictates of beauty and identity. A program of panel discussions and screenings accompanies the exhibition which is scheduled to close on April 21.

AROUND CHELSEA (cont)
A Brief History of Chelsea
The West Side neighborhood of Manhattan is named after Chelsea manor which was Sir Thomas Moore's home. Until the mid 19 th century it was surrounded by gardens but the right-of-way of the Hudson River Railroad brought an industrial transformation to the neighborhood. It later became a center for the motion picture industry until WWI.
Chelsea has recently become a melting pot of many cultures. Above 23rd Street , by the the Hudson River, most of Chelsea is still industrialized, and the forgotten High Line follows the river all through Chelsea . Eighth Avenue is a center for gay culture, and from 20th to 22nd street, between Ninth and Tenth Avenue, historic brownstones built over a hundred years ago are still being used. Since the mid-1990s the area from 16th Street to 27th Street , between 10th and 11th Avenues has become home to the New York art scene.

Featured Artist
Fantastical, cutting and distinct are the three words that best sum up the works of T. Mikey. Several of his creations were recently featured in Agora Gallery's Pixel Perfect: The Digital Fine Art Exhibition . But his genius and phantasmagorical imagination extend beyond the domain of the digital. T. Mikey's imagination took root in the world of comic-book style line-drawing and his artistic wizardry matured into hyper-realist 21 st century surrealism. He masterfully captures the
figure and the mindscape and manufactures beauty and meaning through illusion using an array of techniques from pencil portraiture, figure illustration, murals, photographic canvas manipulation, collage and 3D rendering.

You are The Wheel of Fortune
Good fortune and happiness but sometimes a species of
intoxication with success
The Wheel of Fortune is all about big things, luck, change, fortune. Almost always good fortune. You are lucky in all things that you do and happy with the things that come to you. Be careful that success does not go to your head however. Sometimes luck can change.
