“Start Dialing For Life”
Sometimes all people need is one phone call. They only need to hear one voice on the other end saying, “ I just called to say I love you and everything will be alright.” That might be the ring that helped take the bullets out the gun, the pills out of the hand or the knife away from the wrist. When we think about saving a life, we often correlate that thought with being a hero: A superman, batman, or Spiderman type person. We imagine we have to run into a burning building and pull someone out or doing something extreme like jump in front of a bullet that almost hit another but that’s not true. Although those things may put you the hero category, it doesn’t make you less heroic to do something on a smaller scale. You don’t have to wear a mask and super cool costume to save everyday people with thoughts of suicide. You might only need a voice and a few minutes of time to save the person or people close to you or the people or person close to someone else. The same words that can make a person feel like they have nothing to live for can be rearranged to make a person feel secure about having everything to live for. I always say, “ If you want to kill a person, make that person believe they have nothing to live for and if you want to see that person kill them self: After making them believe they have nothing to live for, make them believe that they have nothing else to live for.” Why not use the same mouth we use to tear so many people and things down with daily, to try and save a life? Cell phones can become lifelines instead of devices only used to generate normal everyday conversations. Your what are you doing’s can turn into how are you doing’s? Who’s over there can turn into whom do you need over there? What are you doing later can turn into what do you need to do now? It’s just as simple as it sounds. One person, one phone call, a little bit of your of time, generosity, and motivation. There are probably millions of people at home right now waiting on the phone to ring. Hoping and praying that someone calls to renew their faith and let them know that you don’t have to see the air to keep breathing. Those people might be your friends, your mother, your sisters, your brothers, your high school sweethearts or even a stranger. You never know whose will is being written in pencil with hopes receiving a reason to erase it; while you sit somewhere doing nothing with knowledge of their insecurities, fears, heartbreaks, failures and still choose not to call. I know how it feels to need a 4am phone call; I also know how it feels to need a 4pm phone and don’t doubt that most of us do. Be the friend you need someone to be to you once a day or once a week. Don’t send out a text message or an email and hope to save a life pick, up the phone and provide a comforting voice. Go to bed at night knowing that someone will wake up tomorrow because of you or wake up tomorrow knowing that someone will sleep that night because of you. Go through your phonebooks, think about the people who may need you to call them and start dialing as if someone life depends on it!
