The TMJ Association is a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the diagnosis, care and treatment of everyone affected by TMJ diseases and disorders through fostering research, education and other activities with the ultimate goal of preventing TMJ problems. We achieve our mission by:
• Advocating for the needs of TMJ patients.
• Promoting awareness of TMJ diseases and disorders among the public, policy makers, research and healthcare communities.
• Connecting TMJ patients with those who can provide knowledgeable support and empathetic understanding.
• Encouraging basic and clinical research on TMJ diseases and disorders to provide greater understanding and safer and more effective methods of diagnosis and treatment, based on scientific evidence.
• Serving as a resource for the collection and dissemination of information on advances in research, treatment, insurance practices, patients' rights, and legal and ethical issues.
• Communicating with elected officials, government agencies, professional organizations, community leaders and other policy makers concerning TMJ issues.
• Collaborating with a prestigious Scientific Advisory Board.
Who I'd like to meet:
TMJ patients, family members, friends, supporters, health organizations
Just wondering why their aren't any local groups that meet in person? This is greatly needed I live in the Sacramento, California area. They have groups that meet for every other medical condition why not this?
Thank you for bringing TMJ awareness to myspace. I've had non-reducing displaced discs for years, used nightguards, and just avoid hard to chew food...I think it also helps other TMJ sufferers to be able to reach out to others and learn about ways to cope and alternative treatments (especially when most medical plans exclude TMJ coverage).
September 30, 1997 Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank designated November as Jaw Joints-TMJ Awareness Month. His proclamation acknowledged that temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJDs) are "among the more painful, yet least understood disorders affecting people today."
In May the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) kicked off an awareness campaign in the Washington DC area. The TMJA is excited to highlight this campaign on our web site during Jaw Joints-TMJ Awareness month. To learn more visit us at www. tmj. org.
I just wanted to let you know that I posted a blog about the TMJ Foundation, and a Vlog on my You Tube Channel as well (www. youtube. com/AlwaysMerna).
Check it out....
Please continue what you are doing, and whatever else I can do to help even more please let me know.
The TMJ Association is very excited to introduce its new online patient forum! The forum, moderated by longtime TMJA member and TMJD sufferer Stacy Stone, is designed to give patients a place to post their stories, ask questions and receive advice from fellow patients. We are very pleased that Stacy is joining the TMJ family in a very special way as the volunteer Online Communications Coordinator. We welcome her vitality and her gift of making those with whom she communicates feel at home.
Current sections include News and Announcements, TMJ Disorder Questions and Information, Sister Syndromes, Caregivers, Pain Management, News, to name a few. Registration is free. Simply go to http://forum. tmj. org to join.
Educational articles are also posted, as well as links to other information about TMJD to help you educate yourself about your condition, proposed treatments.

I just wanted to say that I have had TMJ for nearly 10 years now. I recently went to my old dentist from my childhood and he made me a small mouth guard to sleep in, almost within 2 days my pain has been reduced and my teeth are less sensitive. If ya'll are like me who suffer on a daily basis with ridiculous pain from this disorder I would suggest going to a good dentist and talking to them about a mouth guard. I also have heard recently about the powers of a certain acai juice blend drink that I will be purchasing here real soon. One of the benefits to this drink is that it helps with arthritis pain, which if you do have TMJ arthritis is in your future.
I have insurance and am scheduled to have an arthroscopy for my TMJ (my disc on the left side is forward) however the actual surgery for this is not covered by my insurance. Apparently they don't cover anything related to TMJ - does anyone know why this is????

Legislation proposed by National Patient Advocate Foundation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on June 22nd, 2007. The two bills, HR 2833 and HR 2842, eliminate barriers to health insurance coverage. Introduced by Representative Joe Courtney (D-CT), HR 2833, titled the "Preexisting Condition Exclusion Patient Protection Act of 2007", protects patients from pre-existing condition limitations. Its Senate companion, S. 2236, was introduced by Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) in October 2007. The second bill, HR 2842, titled the "Children’s Health Protection Act of 2007" was introduced by Representative Allyson Schwartz (D-PA) and eliminates pre-existing condition limitation periods for children in the private health insurance market.
NPAF continues to seek support in Congress for these important bills but we need your help! Contact your U.S. Representative and/or Senators and urge them to cosponsor HR 2833, HR 2842, and S. 2236. Visit www. house. gov to learn how to contact your Representative or www. senate. gov to learn how to contact your Senators.
Has anyone tried prolotherpy for their TMJ problems. I am going on 8 years, my 4th splint, and regrettable i am back on pain medication. The other day I found a website talking about this prylotherapy and I'm wondering if any of you have experienced it? Please drop me a line and let me know. Thanks !
Hi Amity, I'm currently going down the road of having my bite checked. I have felt for a LONG time that my bite changed after difficult wisdom teeth extractions, and that it's the main cause of my left-sided headaches. But I'm going to proceed w/caution...am seeing a well-trained dentist who's going to give me a conservative splint. I would not consider making ANY permanent changes to my bite unless the splint works first...this is a VERY important step!
Anyway, I am sorry to hear that you've suffered w/this for so long! I sure do hope you can find relief SOON!!
