Tanya Michelle, a young up and coming diva, was born and raised as Tanya Michelle Smith in Toronto, Canada. Having expressed an interest in music from the tender age of 7, she performed in her community with school choirs, musicals and bands before being scouted at her arts school with scholarships to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston.
While at Berklee, her scholarship achievements continued as she performed as a lead vocalist in the Vocal Jazz shows, and Gospel choirs. She also ventured into studio work with jingles and movie scores in the Boston area before going back to perform with musical groups in Toronto.
Tanya is now performing in many locations in New York City. From working with the new york based band Yazmin, to performing with musicians world wide, she has traveled to Paris, France, Treviso, Italy, Lecce, Italy, St Barts French West Indies Graz, Austria and most recently to Japan. Tanya Michelle continues to do studio work and jingle projects as well as perform live all over the world. Her most recent recordings are with the ska band The Mighty Mighty Bosstones's record titled; A Jackknife to a swan, Kenji Hinos debut record "Kenji Hino in Wonderland," and Tanya Michelle and friends, The Ti St. Barths Experience.
She has now embarked on her own solo career as asinger/songwriter. Her diverse style of singing ranges from sultry, sensual vocal jazz to funky, spiritual and soulful packed R&B, Motown, and funk. Tanya Michelle continues to explore her creative artistic visions with new original songs, and collaborations with other talented songwriters.
The undeniable experience of pure joy she receives and gives from performing is infectiously warming to all those who have seen her live, and worked with her. She is inspired by artists such as; Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder (with whom she has had the pleasure to work and perform), Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Sly and the family Stone, Mary J Blige, Jill Scott, India Arie, Angie Stone, Dangelo, Aretha Franklin, Prince and Chaka Khan.
