About me: YAYA! Some of you may be wondering what this stands for - it's Youth Advocate of the Year. These are people that have been award winners, or finalists for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Youth Advocates of the Year Awards.
Each year, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids sends out a call for nominations to find youth advocates across the country who are dedicated to the tobacco prevention movement. There are a couple of categories within the awards. There is an overall national winner, an international winner (someone who does tobacco control work outside of the U.S.), 4 regional winners (east, west, south, and central) and finally a group winner.
The winners receive scholarships and grants for their programs. They also get to attend the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids' week-long symposium in Washington, D.C., in July. Here, winners and finalists of the award come together and go through a series of trainings and fun events. They even get to go to Capitol Hill for the day to meet with their Senators and Representatives. The symposium is a great way to network to get new ideas on how to fight the tobacco industry, but it is also a great way to meet some amazing and very talented youth activists.
