Who I'd like to meet: Tobar an Dualchais/ Kist o Riches is an exciting new project, which will use the latest technology to bring to life the voices of the past. It will ensure that our vast heritage of stories, songs, music and factual information - some of it in danger of deteriorating beyond repair - will be safeguarded and made widely available for educational and personal use.
In the first stage of the project, which will run for five years, 12,000 hours of recordings in Gaelic and Scots will be safeguarded and made available to members of the public.
Recordings will be included from three world-famous collections, recorded at the very beginning of sound technology right up to the present day. They comprise a wide variety of material, including:
• Stories recorded by John Lorne Campbell on wax cylinders in 1935
• Folklore collected from all over Scotland by Calum MacLean in the 1950s
• Scots songs recorded by Hamish Henderson for the School of Scottish Studies from travelling people in the 1960s
• Conversations recorded on Radio nan Gàidheal

Where traditions are not so rare; Sea, country and works scent the air; A multitude of monuments, Planted tubs and patterned pavements.
The longish pedestrian malls; The remnants of defensive walls; Historic buildings are a gauge Of the respect for heritage.
Wheat, rape and pines in the fields; Estuaries guarded by shields; Long sandy beaches and wide scenes; Romantic-ruin go-betweens.
Rivers in parts licked by trees, Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries, And crossed by practical delights - Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.
Fine churches headed at Durham; Football kits ad infinitum; Kept castles - one for study; Masonry behind masonry.
And, with moulding-works out that way, It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

What an interesting Friend you are! I worked on a Scottish Oral History Group project a few years back in the fishing village of Avoch and we accumulated a number of audio discussions on village life through last century. These were supposed to be lodged at the National Museum of Scotland and copies returned to us to be held by the Avoch Heritage Association. We never saw them. I was hoping to transcribe them fully and use them for an exhibition in the village. Have you had any contact with the SOHG? Any idea what happened to the recordings? There was a number of villages involved in the project, around year 2000, I think.
