In late spring 2007, bassist/vocalist Alex Schumacher was in the process of putting together a new band. Originally from the agricultural Central Valley of California, Alex grew up around (and has been influenced by) a vast array of roots music including Country, Blues and Folk.
Soon after his search began Alex found a kindred musical spirit in drummer/vocalist Jesse Richards. Hailing from North Carolina, Jesse came to San Francisco to study music at SF State and to play in the city. Jesse's influences call upon a love for Blues, Folk, and Jazz and nod heavily back to the folk sounds heard in the appalaichains of the tarheel state.
After a number of performances as an acoustic duo, the pair continued to look for another member. They found exactly what they were looking for (and needed) in guitarist/vocalist Matt Wilson. Growing up in England and moving to San Francisco in 2007, Matt's musical influences draw heavily from British folk. Matt's contributions have helped to vary the groups sound even more by delivering a range from laid-back melodic meanderings to Reggae-inflected Funk-Rock.
The final piece of the puzzle was added in August of 2008 when keyboardist Manuel Camacho joined the fray adding a rich layer of texture which was missing from Tobela's sound.
Over the past several months Tobela have honed and refined their songs. They now focus on delivering great live shows with good songwriting, strong vocal harmonies and solid musicianship. Tobela will be in the studio soon to record their first EP...
