If I could have any car in the world it would have to be a 1954 Mercedes Benz 220. Ralph in Singapore in 1970 owned 17 vintage cars which he restored and this was one of them! I have an obsession with water towers. I saw these in Manhattan in May! I can't stop looking at this photograph! You can keep Geoge Clooney...I have these water towers!

And then of course I have an obsession with bridges and rivers...This is my photograph of Brooklyn Bridge over the East River taken from a boat on the river. The East River is not really a river, but a tidal strait.. and a line drawing of Brooklyn Bridge by master mechanic E.F. Farrington from "Concise Description of the East River Bridge," published by C.D. Wynkoop Printers, 1881. ...and here's an original cross section of the roadway on the Brooklyn Bridge. "Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and cannot remain silent." Victor Hugo ---------------------------------------------------- These Joni Mitchell lyrics make me blush!!!!............ I feel your leg under the table Leaning into mine I feel renewed, I feel disabled, By these bonfires in my spine, I don't know who the arsonist was, Which incendiary soul? But all I ever wanted Was just to come in from the cold.??

Aaah...MAD WITHIN REASON.....Well..this is an album that is timeless and a complete joy to listen to not just for the timbre and dynamics of Mr Murphy's voice, but also for the range of styles he covers and dark lyrics. Here's a taster from 'Comfortable Cage'....... She spoke of him in whispers that fell on every ear Then waited in the bedroom for the ghost to reappear Through every wicked instinct, through the perfume and restraint A perfect mediocrity with not as much as one complaint..... Jazz, Folk (I love people who sing in their regional accents, like Kate Rusby in her Yorkshire accent, Kris Drever in his Scottish (Orcadian?)accent, John Spillane in his native Cork accent), Country Music, Rock, Soul, Motown, Blues, Roots, "World" (Mali & Senegal etc (Yossou N'Dour singing Sama Guent is sublime!!! Habib Koite, Oliver Mutukudze (Wake up Wake up open your eyes!)etc. Music to raise your temperature - Afro(Cuban,Garifuna, Congolese, Senegalese etc) Music to cool you down, music to make you feel naughty,) Fado..Gypsy...etc (ISN'T ALL MUSIC, WORLD MUSIC?????) Chantys & other sea and river songs, Pirate songs, Medieval French, Contemporary French (Jacques Brel (I know he's Belgian!), Charles Trenet, but what about the music from all those French films too....especially Belleville Rendezvous. Irish (Fiddle & Box) Dave Munnelly's box playing has to be seen and heard to be believed, R & B. Classical (String and Piano) Pablo Casals, Paul Tortelier, Jacqueline Du Pre, Yo Yo Ma, David Oistrakh, Daniel Baremboin to name some, Percussion (Marimba & Drums), Trumpet and saxophone (The Marsalis Brothers, Julio (2 Grammys)Padron but most incredibly the unique and exceptional trumpet player Chris Botti who suspends you in space and time and sensation in a way that I've never heard since, Trombone some mean playing from (at Rev Vince Andersons Monday shindig!) the phenomenol Dave Smith who plays in at least 50 bands, Stan Getz & Paul Desmond) Brass Bands (The Colliery types) Opera (Callas, Jessey Norman, Angela Gheorghiou,Carreras, Domingo, Pavarotti,Bocelli) My lovely friend Rick Snyder who translates his multiple personality surplus into a variety of music styles and plays a mean guitar. One of my favourite days in Dublin was with one of my dearest friend Antoine Cummings who plays World Music on Raidio na Life in Dublin. This is a meticulously sourced programme and the passion with which Antoine puts the programme together is obvious when you hear his selection of music and the relevant information that goes with it. I learnt to speak Gaelic phonetically as it is an Irish language station. Do listen to Antoine's show Gach. You can pick it up anywhere in the world on your internet:(WWW.RNL106.COM). It is rare that I will ask you to switch off the music on my player and listen to this video clip of MILES FROM INDIA. Go ahead! Do it! Listen! But, only the once OK? My player has great music, so come back and listen to it! If you have the opportunity, do go and see these extraordinary musicians perform live. I saw them at Iridium in New York and it has to be the singularly most mystical, magical, mind blowing orgasmic musical experience that I have ever had. It blew surreal out of the water! And there we were sitting a table away from our musical heroes. Can you imagine having a long conversation with legendary Pete Cosey about his music? I can't but it happened! Am I gushing...well, just a bit! Just listening to this makes my spine tingle...in a good way!

  • Movies

----------- Essentially, when I think about it all the movies that I like and want to covet are always independent films. There is thought and depth and something of the director and their relationship with the actors that makes a connection with me. I love foreign language films...and since I am not English, technically English language films are foreign to me! I guess the most perfect film for me has to be Belleville Rendezvous. It is flawless, the music incomparable. The other film which would probably play at my funeral and have everyone dancing would be Tony Gatlif's film "Latcho Drom". I once spent an entire weekend watching this over and over again! It traces the route of the Romani from Rajasthan Northern India to Europe but through music and dance no dialogue. It has to be the most exquisite film ever made. I can't understand why World Movies has been taken off Sky Movies. In October 09 I saw Coen Bros 'A Serious Man'and I've adopted a phrase or two (quite shamelessly!) 'Accept the Mystery' to paraphrase a quote the Coens use as an epigraph—to receive with simplicity everything that happens. ‘When the truth is found to be lies and all the joy within you dies, don’t you want somebody to love?' (Jefferson Airplane's 1967 LP Surrealistic Pillow plays in the background ) This film is intellectually fierce & unique (Jewish Film Noir?) and tells the story of impending disaster that hovers over beleaguered Larry Gopnik. a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university whose wife informs him that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous acquaintances, who seems to her a more substantial person and makes alternative living arrangements. Larrys unemployable brother sleeps on the sofa and becomes an increasing burden, his son is a discipline problem and a shirker at Hebrew school, and his daughter filches money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. Also an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larrys chances for tenure at the university and a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while at the same time threatening to sue him for defamation. Plus, the beautiful woman next door torments him by sunbathing nude. Struggling Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person -- a mensch -- a serious man? He just gets more and more confused. In May I saw Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight (2009)about the creator of The New York Magazine and the I am so inspired by this man and the film barely touches the inspirational qualities of this modest ego-free man. What a beautiful person. The experience is enhanced by me winning a competition where I won his book! Life is truly magical! I am crazy about Ang Lee films from the Wedding Banquet, Eat Drink, Man Woman to the Wuxia genre Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and have now in my possesion his last film released in the UK..."Lust Caution" which incidentally is one of the most rudest films I have ever seen and extremely violent too...but...I liked it. I also love the Vietnamese & French collaboration films particularly The Scent of Green Papaya. I can watch Satyajit Ray films endlessly from Charulata to Day and Night in The Forest and The World of Apu Trilogy. I adore French films from the 50s, 60 & early 70s but also love the more contemporary ones. Some of my favourite directors are François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard (particularly his three 1967 films Deux ou Trois choses que je sais d'elle, Le Chinoisie & Weekend)), François Ozon, Luis Buñuel, Claude Chabrol, et al! Other English Language films would be Ryan's Daughter which made me fall in love with Ireland and the love affair has remained constant. Also set in Ireland, Dublin, was the excellent film Once. The excellent Saint Jack with Ben Gazzara at his sleaziest and set in the Singapore I remember (memories demolished in the name of progress!) to the award winning No Country for Old Men. It was terrifying but utterly riveting. Jim McKay's film "Our Song," which is a subtle, realist coming-of-age picture about the close friendship between three young teens. This is an amazing film which was shown on World Movies on TV. I am the proud owner of Sydney Pollack's film "Sketches of Gehry". ooooooo

  • Television

Discovery Science, Arts and Performance channels otherwise old TV shows. BBC series on Time — Michio Kaku goes on an extraordinary exploration of the world in search of time. I want this on DVD! I want the book too! News, Question Time, This Week & Newsnight too. I love 'Tribe' and some BBC costume dramas, Later with Jools Holland and most things with music & dance. Look at this video clip of Cordyceps from the BBC series 'Planet Earth'...I am in awe of ants...look at how they work!!! and what happens when a flood hits a fire ant colony in the Amazon and the ants adapt to the water to protect their queen!!! Utterly amazing! And we're supposed to be civilized and advanced!! Pah!!! The thing about Ants is that Ants have no individual entity. They live in a true socialistic atmosphere for the betterment of their society-whether it is for nest making, searching and collecting food, or feeding their young. At the time of danger they try to save their society collectively. Without thinking about their own lives first they try to rescue their larvae and pupae for the future. They instinctively go forward and fight together until their last breath.
  • Books

Given the current state of politics, 2 books I'm revisiting are Reclaiming The Truth by Christopher Norris (1996) which challenges cultural relativist doctrine in epistemology, philosophy of science, ethics and political theory and takes issue with the relativist position and argues the consequences of theoretical discourse in ethics. T'other book is Appleby Hunt & Jacobs 'Telling The Truth About History'(1994)which tries to regain the grip on the ever receding historical truth and how popular programmes shape historical events and public knowledge. A feel good book is Parallels and Paradoxes, conversations which are profound, affectionate and impassioned between 2 friends Edward Said and Daniel Barenboim who explore and exchange thoughts on Music & Society. Another recommendation is a series of interviews from the Harvard Review of Philosophy, Philosophers in Conversation. Read this in the morning since it opens provocative new lines of approach to 14 philosopher's work covering a range of issues from law to logic, metaphysics to literature. Reading this at bed time will guarantee you a sleepless and restless night! So there, I've warned you. Gabriel Garcia Marquez 'Leaf Storm' (short stories)'Love in the Time of Cholera' & 'Of Love and Other Demons'. Isabel Allende's 'Of Love and Shadows' and Ines of my Soul. Almost anything by Francoise Sagan and Tennessee Williams. 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged' (Yes I know it's a bit right wing!) by Ayn Rand, Peanuts by Charles Schulz, 'The Great Railway Bazaar'and most of the early books by Paul Theroux. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain and Charlotte's Web by E B White. Yeat's Poetry and you may have noticed my penchant for all things Irish and this of course includes the way the Irish use English in a way that would make most English writers want to give up the quill. I love Beckett, Wilde, Shaw, Hugh Leonard, Synge, Sean O'Casey, John Banville, Behan, Frank O Connor and more. Tagore, Arundhati Roy's non-fiction fierce writing. Political Cartoons by Steve Bell and Martin Rowson They are geniuses! Please check Roger Davidson in my Top Friends who is an excellent political cartoonist and an excellent essayist and journalist. Forgot the brilliant Jules Feiffer too. And so much more....Also 3 Chinese poets Wang Wei, Li Bai, Du Fu and the great Russian poet Yvgeny Yevtushenko. Love Senryu and Tanka and some Haiku. Hardy, Gaskell, Gibran, Frost, Chekov, Solzhyenitzin (quite a few of the Russian writers)and a million more names....and many many more. •*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*• When you come to me, unbidden, Beckoning me To long-ago rooms, Where memories lie. Offering me, as to a child, an attic, Gatherings of days too few. Baubles of stolen kisses. Trinkets of borrowed loves. Trunks of secret words, I CRY. by Maya Angelou •*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*• The Heart The heart is little more than a glorified pump. It performs a simple but essential mechanical function. Why then, do poets and writers equate it with idealism, sincerity and romance? What link can there really be between the physical heart and the 'emotional centre' of the same name? Because, at the spiritual essence of every being, there's a similar, simple 'pump'. The lifeblood that it circulates is 'enthusiasm for existence'. Jonathan Cainer •*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥¸¸.•*¨*••*¨*•.¸¸♥ ¸¸.•*¨*•
  • Heroes

There are real heroes in my life and plenty of them. Everyday they affirm what I firmly believe about them. They have been selfless, giving, loving and courageous often extending themselves beyond the capacity of most human beings. They have insight, integrity, intelligence and imagination, four qualities that are important to me. To see that so many people that I know possess these qualities is beyond my wildest dreams. I am grateful that I have them in my life.

    Undone

    When it rains, showered
    In ardor, drunk & delirious
Greet love and know my heart
So when the storm comes calling
Again and the clouds escort the Sun
Away, the shine shall dissolve in my
    Eyes
And as thunder cries out my name, the
Stone bleeds at last, remember to run
Naked in the rain to breathe me in
For it is merely my broken heart

    Failing…
    Falling from
    Above…

thank U for being precious, loved the words sweetness. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to U, it's been a hectic few weeks ~kiss~ have a great weekend
