In 2008, Shalini and Dhruv decided to start a blues trio. After a couple of jam sessions, Aditya was roped in to handle the skins and vocal duties. This was the beginning of " Today's Special". Eventually Sathwick was pulled in to lend his expertise on the drums.
Since then, Today's Special has gone on to stand out, not just because of their name, but also the music. Simply because Today's Special plays just what it feels like playing. Be it funk, blues, good ol rock and even prog rock.
The musicians are influenced by a host of varying musicians and genres; with Shalini being a thorough jazz and funk junkie, Aditya a classic rock lover, Satwick into hard rock and old school metal and Dhruv influenced by everything from shred to blues to prog to even metal. The result of these varied influences are heated jam room arguments which the band enjoys (usually ends up with chinese food and beer).
The band has composed a host of originals, each disitnct and with a unique flavour. Aditya pens the words, Dhruv writes the main structures while Shalini and Sathwick get the groove going.
Today's Special has played a host of gigs in 2008 ranging from the fuel tour at Legends of Rock, The pub gigs in Mysore, The october fest, and were nominated for "Band of the year" at Freedon Jam. The song "Alu Tikki" was featured on the Strawberry Fields 2008 CD. The band looks forward to playing more gigs in the new year and spread their unique blend of music to wider audiences. So come watch us do the groove thing!!!
