Todor Nikolaev was born in 1982. He started study violin at the age of five. In 2000 he finished with distinction the five years course at the National School of Music “Lyubomir Pipkov” in Sofia, Bulgaria in the violin class of Radmila Petrova, and at the age of 17 became the first student in the history of the School, performed the Elgar’s Violin Concerto. In the same year, after a competition, Todor wins a Bursary award from the Corporation of London to study at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama where he completed his Bachelor and Master degrees with honours in the violin classes of Professor
Yfrah Neaman and Professor John Glickman.
Todor has participated in the master classes of Prof. Yfrah Neaman, Prof. Mincho Minchev, Prof. Zvi Zeitlin, Prof. Mary-Tempere Bezrodny and Prof. Kevork Mardirossian. Also as a member of different chamber ensembles he had the opportunity to work with artists as Melos, Takacs and Velinger Quartets, Rachel Podger and Sir Colin Davis.
Todor Nikolaev is a prizewinner at several competitions such as The International Violin Competition “Remember Enescu”-1998, Romania; The International Violin Competition “Jan Kocian”-1998, Czech Republic and The National Competition for interpretation of German and Austrian music –1997, Bulgaria.
Todor is a regular soloist of the Shumen and Vidin Philharmonic Orchestras in Bulgaria and also gives many chamber recitals in London, around the UK as well in Bulgaria. He has made recordings for the Bulgarian National Television and Radio, BBC1, BBC Radio 3 and RAI Due.
In 1999 Todor was invited by Nigel Kennedy to play with him on his concert in Sofia, part of his European tour.
Todor's repertoire includes works from nearly all periods of music as well as contemporary and jazz. In 2004, whilst a student at the Guildhall School, he made the UK première of the Sonata-Impression for Violin and Piano by the Bulgarian composer Yavor Dimitrov. In 2006, he gave the world premières of Three Shropshire Songs and the Concertante for Violin, Piano and String Orchestra by the British composer Philip Sawyers, respectively, at the Guildford Festival and the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts, London and in 2008- the world première of the completion of Grieg’s piano quintet by Michael Finnissy with the Franke Piano Quintet at St. John's Smith Square, London.
Todor Nikolaev is a member of The Franke Piano Quintet and is also established as a violin tutor at the renowned Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and Arts, The University of Reading, St. Swithun's School in Winchester and as a member of the Young Music Makers (YMM) Organisation, teaches at the William Ellis School, London.
In 2006 he became a member of The Lennox Berkeley Society.
His future plans include a number of performances of Beethoven's violin concerto and Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante in the UK and Bulgaria as well as concerts with the Franke Piano Quintet.
The latest project Todor is involved in, as a founder and a performer as well, is called Inspirity. It is an open field for musicians and other performing artists to experiment with and explore all kinds of different styles and types of music and other different arts, and combining them in various original ways to provide and establish a unique style of performance.
