"Radio in a Rabbit Hole", the third EP from To Get The Girls, has just been released, and looks poised to propel the band into its biggest period thus far, pushing the band even further with their unique style of what THEY know as rock music.
Playing together since 2001, guitarist/vocalist Angus Burns, bassist Justin Richards, drummer Adrian Van Bloom and guitarist Cassidy Van Bloom have made the most of their upbringings in the sleepy timber town of Erica (2 ½ hours South of Melbourne), utilizing the isolation as a means of honing in on their own unique style without too much outside influence.
The music that To Get the Girls produce is a style that has yet to be attained by most bands in their local music scene: pop-punk without the pop or the punk, alternative without the "look", screamo without the bitching, arty without the arrogance, and experimental without being
impossible to listen to. A plethora of wide and varying influences ensures that each listen is a unique journey, all the while keeping you not too far from home. Honest to their roots, yet innovative enough to seize and maintain interest.
Don't let the name fool you though, To Get the Girls isnt a name to emphasize the childishness of the bands members and music, it is more a parody on themselves, a "piss-take" if you will, and a catchy one at that. It's a name to show the tongue-in-cheek-nature of the band, not necessarily
their music, but the members of the band itself. The music made by TGTG is dynamic yet subtle, brutal yet catchy, honest yet fun, and so deep you could swim in it. Working with producer Adam Nova of Stuff Records, the songs on Radio in a Rabbit Hole were carefully crafted as sounds were intricately layered and positioned throughout the aural spectrum, achieving a depth so far unheard on any previous release from To Get The Girls.
Since the release of Radio, To Get The Girls have supported the EP as much as possible through their trademark vigorous and dynamic live shows, with flamboyant drumming (and drummer, for that matter) underpinning the incessant bass lines, which provide a backbone for the organic, intertwined twin guitars. All the while Angus delivering some structure to the chaos as best he knows how by 'pouring words out like a fire hose on an unquenchable fire' (Neil Wedd, Inpress Magazine 2006)
To Get the Girls are working hard to promote the new EP as much as possible, and it's only a matter of time before you're singing along.
In August 06, after months and months of bullshit within the band, they decided to drop it. Cassidy went over to America for a while, and thought he'd be better off not bothering finding a new singer, so he felt obliged to leave too. Justin continued his work with Straight 80, and left and the band finished.
Since the fall of TGTG, Justin is now playing bass in Straight 80. Angus now sings and plays guitar in greengreengreen. Both of them are having the times of their lives. Adrian is still playing drums and Cassidy is still recording music.
So that's it. No farewell/reunion shows, no box-set compilations, no re-mastered/mixed/packaged versions of CD-R's and tapes with new artwork and linear notes. No pre-mature deaths (at time of writing), no rehab stints (at time of writing). All that's left is a few memories and a hell of alot of learning by four quite competent musicians, who will forever prove that without chemistry and direction, you're fucked.
